How do people react when they hear someone tearing a paper?

Asked by flo (13313points) January 13th, 2014

Say you’re in a public place where it is quiet enough,(but not a library or anything) and someone tears a newspaper, let’s say, in half. Do people stop what they are doing to turn around to see who the person doing this terrible thing is,or do you find they hardly notice it at all? And if your answer is the former, why do they find it a bad thing to do?

I can only tell you what I assume since I’ve never conducted an experiment on this. If it’s a pretty loud noise compared to the rest of the environment, then I think that some people would look up from what they are doing. But just because one might look up to see who tore the paper doesn’t mean one thinks it’s a terrible thing to do.

@dxs I guess so. I’m going to do the experiment soon.
People who have noticed this say that other noises don’t seem to make them turn around just the paper.

I know that kids in class stop what they are doing and look up in shock thinking their papers were so bad that they weren’t even worth reading. When they realize it is something else being torn, they go back to their business.

@ZEPHYRA I can see that. Phew! not my work!

I will hide under a desk and crawl into the fetal position, teeth chattering.

@flo exactly that!
