Any musical theater enthusiasts here?
Either as a production participant or a fan or both.
I’ve loved musicals since I was about 8, which was when I saw my first production. It was “Pippin” at Lincoln Center.
I started doing theater at age 9 and stopped at age 26 due to health problems.
I haven’t been in a production in ten years. But I love it just as much as I ever did, if not more.

I always liked going to my high school’s musicals. Being someone who loves music, I have to say the biggest reason for going was because of the music and the voices more than the acting or anything. But one play I saw (not at my high school) was Wicked, and I loved the message. (It also happens to be my favorite musical soundtrack).
@dxs I have actually not seen Wicked. Theater tickets are so costly, especially Broadway type touring companies. I have to be very very picky. I like to see shows when I can at a theater about an hour away that produces profession productions. (tickets are like 40 bucks, instead of twice that in Chicago)
I don’t know how much the tickets were because my mom won the tickets at her work. But it’s such a good play.
@anniereborn Wicked is awesome. Put it on your list if must sees. I paid a reasonable price to see the touring company in Memphis. I saw them in Toronto also and it was more expensive there. I very rarely go to the theatre in NYC, except I do love to splurge for the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center (I realize that is not a musical). Broadway is ridiculously expensive, and the touring groups are usually quite good.
When I lived in Memphis I was lucky that they had an excellent local theatre. I saw The Producers there, that was really cute, I had never seen it before, and Fiddler on the Roof, and a couple of others. Maybe you should get involved with a local theatre, sounds like you miss it. It doesn’t have to be acting, it could be helping with fund raising, working the box office, being an usher, anything.
I love them! I used to do a lot of amateur productions as a kid but I much prefer to watch nowadays. In a couple of months time I am going to London to see Charlie and The Chocolate Factory which is fairly new to the West End. My favourite musical is Phantom of the Opera followed by Les Miserables. I also love Fiddler on the Roof, Miss Saigon and Sunset Boulevard. I am definitely in the “pro Lloyd Webber” camp too, opinion seems to be very divided on him.
I love show music—the older stuff—thanks to my parents, who played the record albums (yes, that what they were called when I was a kid) constantly. I still have those albums—King and I, Oklahoma, Carousel, My Fair Lady, and many, many others—and though I never listen to them anymore, I still remember all the lyrics,
I’m definitely a fan.
I never learned how to sing properly, so I never tried out for a musical part, but I did drama club all through middle and high school and I love to be on stage. I’ve been thinking about trying out for community theater.
Favourites (no particular order): Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Grease, Fiddler on the Roof, Rocky Horror (it counts!), Peter Pan, Spamalot
I have always loved it. Do you like Barbara Cook?
@marinelife I googled her, and I don’t think I have seen or heard her in anything.
@marinelife I’m afraid “Music Man” is one of my least favorite musicals. She does have a beautiful voice though.
