Best for what?
there is no such thing as a “best language”. You use the language for the environment in which you live.
If you are asking what language is most pleasant to the ear, I would say French.
If you asked which language is most unpleasant to listen to, I would say either Russian or Portuguese, with any of the Scandanavian languages running close behind.
My favorite language is Latin—sounds the best, the grammatical system is my favorite, and I wish it were still spoken as a first language. :)
@elbanditoroso Chacun a son gout. Both Cantonese and Mandarin are just awful to listen to, by my Western ear. Sound like cats being gutted.
Personally, I think French is about best, except the French Academy doesn’t like French to evolve. Otherwise, it would be to me a clear winner. So English is the most useful because it adapts new terms and meanings, and can express the most technical meanings and the most emotional. But it is hard to learn, it has a lot of exceptions to every rule.
I’m with @DominicX I like Latin a lot, or second-choice French.
