I was walking my neighbor’s chihuahua along the shore of a lake this morning, and I had brought some bread for the mallards. I scooped the dog up, held her while I fed the ducks, and then maybe 30 yards away I set her back down. She was maybe 20 feet away from me when a huge brown bird swooped down on her… It was more of a “fly-by” than a claws out predatory attack, thank goodness, but the bird swooped directly over the dog, maybe a foot overhead. It flew to a nearby fence and sat and watched us. I could throw in a “like a hawk” pun here, but I took pictures (I had already snatched up the dog), and have narrowed it down to a golden eagle or a juvenile bald eagle. Really, really big bird…
So I carried her all the way home, thinking about the amazing eyesight birds have and imagining the worst if I set her down. Can you imagine explaining that to your neighbor?
And, as a side note, do you think bringing the ducks around led the bird to us, or it was a coincidence?
