Backcountry cross country ski distances?

Asked by Jonathan_hodgkins (690points) February 5th, 2014

I am planning a multiple day backcountry xc-ski trip with some friends. All are relatively fit, experienced in the woods and capable. What would a recommended distance be for one full day of skiing in ungroomed trails (in the woods)?

Guided ski tours in Yosemite run about 10 – 12 miles a day. I’d figure that is on trails, and probably not so much trail breaking, so you can plan 7 – 8 miles.

You don’t say what kind of terrain, I would think mountain climbs would be tiring and cut down how much distance you can cover.
