Is it possible to do this? Has anyone ever done it or knows about anybody who has done it? I wonder what that is like?

Do you mean Colombia? The country in South America? Or, Columbia, MD?
There have been amphibious vehicles that have driven around the world, so it’s technically possible to drive from the country of Columbia to New York. How safe it would be to drive through Central America is another issue.
If you mean another Columbia (like Columbia, MD or British Columbia) then it’s a bit easier.
Ok, so I guess you mean Colombia South America. There is a ferry service (unless it has been discontinued) from Colombia to Panama. From Panama you can drive up through central America into Mexico and cross the border to the US. The Pan-American highway runs through Central America. In fact the highway basically runs in US (we have designated oart of our interstate system as part of the Pan American highway system) through South America with the only missing gap being the small gap between Colombia and Panama. There is an absence of road between Colombia and Panama (unless something has changed that I don’t know about, which is possible) so the ferry would be the best route, it is a passenger and car ferry. Between the two countries it is basically jungle, and I think some people do drive it in utility type vehicles, but I assume it is very difficult and slow going for that part of the trip.
That’s what I know on the topic, but you should research it more, don’t rely on my information.
Yes, it is possible. People have driven south from the US deep into South America, so it is possible. But not easy, and challenging getting past the cartels in Mexico.
The cartels probably aren’t that interested in random motorists passing down the highway.
Columbia, MO? Columbia, SC? I can only answer for Columbia SC—yes, because I have done it? If you mean Colombia, The South American country, I’m sure there are roads in Mexico and Central america that would make that drive less than comfortable, but yes, you can drive through/across the Panama Canal from South to Central America, to Mexico and into the US.
It’s called the Centennial bridge – built in 2004 and the second bridge connecting Panama and Central America.
@VS The Centennial bridge is over the Panama Canal I think. The canal is not the problem. The Canal has Panama on both sides. Well south of it is the border to South America/Colombia.
It is possible,if you survive the bandits of Mexico, and have no real breakdowns I would think flying would be much cheaper, and if you need to, rent a vehicle when you get there.
