“I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.” ~Dirty Dancing
A man who makes such a promise is a liar.
-Conan
Ain’t the romantic type much haha.
The one with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt where he says to her “You make me want to be a better man.”
Book and movie both, makes my heart sigh….
“He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
― Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights
“I have for the first time found what I can truly love–I have found you. You are my sympathy–my better self–my good angel–I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wrap my existence about you–and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”
― Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre
It’s not from a movie, but from the TV show Doc Martin
Kevin Costner to ‘Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham:
“Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.”
Plenty of ‘em, but I’m going the anti-romantic route. In the wonderful 1936 film “Dodsworth,” which on the subject of love and marriage still rings true today, the title character finally realizes he can’t stay with his wife because of her constant philandering and leaves her screaming at him on a cruise ship.
His final line to her: “Love has got to stop some place short of suicide.”
If you like romantic movies and don’t mind watching one that’s 78(!!!) years old, catch Dodsworth.
From A Walk to Remember, when Landon visits Jamie’s dad after her death:
Landon: I’m sorry she never got her miracle.
Jamie’s dad: She did, it was you.
OK, so I hardly like this movie at all, but after this one line I just bawl like a baby. The most beautiful movie line ever. The movie has a killer soundtrack though, I got it through the mail just today.
From the movie “Secretary”:
Each cut, each scar, each burn, a different mood or time. I told him what the first one was, told him where the second one came from. I remembered them all. And for the first time in my life I felt beautiful. Finally part of the earth. I touched the soil and he loved me back.
Not from a movie or book, but Shane Koyczan said:
And as for romance? Well, I want that too. I want to fall asleep next to you, 100 times a night, so I can know you 100 times better before we hit the day light. And in spite of all of this, I also want amnesia so I can relive each kiss with a perfect newness that leaves me smashed in the arms of rapture. I want the sky to fracture under the impossible weight of an apology because I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I want so much.
I’m sorry that I’m using “I’m sorry” as a crutch to lean on for so long, but if you sing me that song of sweet logic again then I promise to make the effort to stand on my own. There is a reason that our hearts are more like a muscle and less like a bone. I’ve known so many people who’ve have grown up flexing in front of the mirror, as if falling for their own reflection would be adequate but that’s bullshit.
Because we only get now until the time we go and if they’ve only got time to love themselves then nobody is going to be around to hear the sound of their heartbeat echo.
So lady, don’t expect an apology when I tell you I’m only held together by a heart that pumps glue, it’s the strongest muscle in my body and I’m flexing it for you.
“I wish I knew how to quit you, Ennis.”
“You should be kissed, and often, and by someone that knows how.”
This two minutes from the end of Casablanca.
The last line of “Some Like it Hot.” After Jack Lemmon as Daphne finally tells Joe E Brown that he (Jack) is a man, Brown says, “Well, nobody’s perfect.”
I have tons of them, for a start: “As you wish.” Princess Bride.
“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above yoru nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend a day with you, I can still smell yoru perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because, I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” – When Harry met Sally.
“I didn’t come here to tell you that I can’t live without you. I can live without you. I just don’t want to.” from Rumor Has It with Jennifer Aniston. This quotes for you!
“Have you never met a woman who inspires you to love? Until your every sense is filled with her? You inhale her. You taste her. You see your unborn children in her eyes and know that your heart has at last found a home. Your life begins with her, and without her it must surely end.” Don Juan Demarco
“Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were suppose to be together… and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home… only to no home I’d ever known… I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like… magic.” – Sleepless in Seattle
I’m bad a remembering quotes, and this quote from Juno isn’t exactly romantic because it is advice from a father to a daughter, but it has stuck with me:
Juno MacGuff: That’s not what it’s about. I just need to know that it’s possible that two people can stay happy together forever.
Mac MacGuff: Well, it’s not easy, that’s for sure. Now, I may not have the best track record in the world, but I have been with your stepmother for 10 years now and I’m proud to say that we’re very happy.
[Juno nods]
Mac MacGuff: Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with.
