When the iPhone is updated, the iPod touch update will be available as well, provided you pay the upgrade fee (which I believe is $9.99)

The update is expected on or before July 11th (when the iPhone 3G is released)

if you want to know how to actually get it on your touch, you will just plug it in to the computer after the update is made available. then your computer (as long as it is connected to the internet) will let you know that there is an update available. it will ask if you want to download and install and you will have to click yes. also you will have to have iTunes 7.7 which is expected to be released the same day as iPhone 3G (July 11). iTunes checks for updates at startup so when you launch iTunes it should automatically tell you when 7.7 is available

Apple screws iPod touch owners for some reason by making you guys pay. You can jailbreak it and get tens of thousands of apps that people made for free. Also, when the App Store does come out, if you have a jailbroken iPod, you’ll be able to get it on it for free as well.

Try googling for ziPhone or iPhone Pwnage tool :) (I jailbroke 2 ipod touches and 3 iphones, multiple times, it does not break or brick them, so no worries).

I don’t know how many times this has been said, but people need to start realizing it is not Apple’s decision to charge for the iPod touch update, it is a law put into place that a product cannot be sold “unfinished” if Apple updated the iPod touch for free the product would then be classified as unfinished, and they would then be slapped with heavy penalties, and have to re-issue sales figures. iPhone owners only get free updates because they pay a monthly fee in order to use the product.

You want free updates for the iPod touch? tell Apple you want to pay a monthly charge, I’m sure they’ll oblige.

And the update will be automatic, once you sync your iPod to a computer with a connection, iPhone will ask if you want to download it, iPod touch will direct you to the store to purchase it.

@inko9nito, quit being ignorant. It is not apple’s fault that they HAVE TO CHARGE YOU (and yes i mean the screaming). search wikipedia for the sarbanes-oxley act. it is because of this that they have to charge you for any substantial product. because if they didnt it would be like they were giving you a new product for free and it is some accounting problem that is illegal

jballou's avatar

@waterskier why so harsh? “Quit being ignorant”? That’s uncalled for.

waterskier2007's avatar

no, its not harsh, its the truth. everyone bashes apple for charging, when they legally HAVE TO. by saying that apple is screwing people “for some reason”, inko9nito is being ignorant, instead of looking up that reason

jballou's avatar

maybe so, but you just made yourself seem like an asshole, unlike the person who actually gave the reason for the charge like a calm and rational human being.

waterskier2007's avatar

yeah your right, its not like i provided a link and the name of the act which forces apple to charge

@waterskier “quit being ignorant” and “screaming”? Calm down, dude, really. Don’t wanna end up like Tim Russert, do ya?

I’m fully aware that there is an accounting / legal problem that results in them charging iPod touch owners for updates, but I don’t for a minute believe that there wasn’t some way around that or simply making the fee lower.

I answered the asker’s question and you just filled the discussion with nothing but negativity. Good luck treating people like shit in the real world, or is it usually the other way around for you? I can see why that would be.

I also could’ve “screamed” at you because I hate when people confuse “you’re” and “your” btw…

Honestly, make it lower than $9.95? That is really cheap and I really don’t think that for what you are getting, it is too much to pay at all. If I had an iPod touch, i would pay 20 bucks just to get this software. The AIM app alone (which is free on the store) is worth $9.95 alone. I can’t see why people would complain about paying $9.95 for something which is worth so much more. It’s like getting a whole new device for a very cheap price.

@waterskier- I think we all understand your point, but you approached and presented it rather offensively, if you had linked the act, as you did, but in a more respectful tone, it probably would have been more welcome. You need to realize that not everyone knows the laws and accounting practices used by companies, this site is designed to bring people the knowledge of others, to solve problems, not create them. Insulting a user for a percieved lack of information, or their opinion, is, as stated already, uncalled for.

Keep in mind people may not know what you do, as you don’t know everything others know. Teach them tactfully, not defensively.

Thanks for linking SOX btw…

waterskier2007's avatar

@bsilver, while i agree with you that i approached it in a harsh way, it is not correct for inko9nito to come right out and say “apple screws iPod touch owners”. because that is completely wrong. and as inko9nito said, they are fully aware why apple charges this so they just purposely said “screw”, it wasnt because of a lack of knowledge

Bsilver's avatar

yes, but people are also entitled to hold their own opinion, one person’s reasonable price is another person’s outrageous price. The cost of the update is relative to it’s value to any given person. Where you and I might think it reasonable, based on content, inko9nito may not find the value of the update worth the cost of updating, so to them, it’s unreasonable, and Apple is “screwing” it’s customers. There’s always a different side to any given situation. You gotta try to see it from the other side.

That being said, how about we all just agree to disagree?

waterskier2007's avatar

then they arent gettting screwed, just dont buy it

inko9nito's avatar

@waterskier (re: AIM app): or you could get Fring for free which includes AIM, Yahoo, GTalk, Skype (yes, you can actually call people using those last two) and twitter… According to you (if AIM app is worth 10 bucks…) this would be worth at least 30 bucks!

I’m not the only one who thinks Apple is “screwing” iPod touch owners, why don’t you google this issue. They use that particular word to describe Apple’s actions quite a bit. But whatevs, you can pay for stuff you could get for free, not my money.

Btw, I’m not against paying for good apps. I donated to 4 apps I got off the Installer.

waterskier2007's avatar

@inko9nito. the difference is that you dont have to be techno savvy to put this one on your ipod (the apple one) and it interfaces much better, and IMO it looks a hell of a lot better. i always thought the installer apps looked like shit, no offense to anyone who created/used them
