What's the best way to recycle alkaline batteries in New York City?

Seems that NYC doesn’t want these in the recycling bins, but collection locations seem pretty sparse. Should I really just throw these in the garbage?

Alkaline batteries used to contain mercury, which was the main reason they were recycled. But manufacturers eliminated all but a minute trace of mercury back around ‘93(?). Since then, hardly anyone takes them for recycling because there’s nothing profitable to recover in them, and they’re generally considered safe for regular trash disposal.
