What is your opinion on global warming?
Can it be fixed or is it too late? Why or why not?
I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of you.

Until I see a shaven polar bear & penguins in sunglasses, I remain unconvinced.
Thank you from the bottom of my fart.
I think it’s real and I do what is in my power to control my footprint within my financial means and lifestyle. Honestly, if it were feasible for me to have a log cabin with a woodstove out in the woods and use solar heat, frow my own food, etc…I’d love to do that. For awhile anyway but it’s just not realistic for all of us, have you priced solar panels?!
Global warming is a fact and our climate and weather patterns are undoubtedly changing. Doing something about the man made causes of it will mean altering our lifestyle which isn’t going to happen.
@ucme Methane
I deny deniers. It’s real, it’s here and it’s going to get a lot worse—and as I recently heard someone say on Bill Maher’s show, doesn’t it makes sense to at least assume it’s real and start preparing ourselves against the increasingly bad weather conditions we’re already seeing.
After this winter here in Chicago I think the Global Warming camp needs to reconvene and rethink their strategy.
That said I cannot imagine all the crap we as guests dump on this planet and our atmosphere does not in some major way harm and impact this environment we live in. Granted the industrial revolution is relatively new and it’s impact to this planet is lacking historical perspective as evidenced by this current Ice Age that has consumed much of the North this winter.
Global Warming??? Meh! IMHO Climate Awareness is in order so let’s put away the torches and pitchforks until we know more about what is going on.
@Cruiser: “After this winter here in Chicago I think the Global Warming camp needs to reconvene and rethink their strategy.”
You realize that this is similar to saying that climate scientists do not have sufficient data because my plate of green beans is cold, right?
^ @hominid fluthering in a bad mood. Apologies.
I read an interesting explanation a couple of days ago for why the godawful Chicago winter was actually caused by the warming of the arctic:
Chicago (and much of the northern US) is typically fenced off from Arctic weather by the high altitude, high-velocity jet stream. The jet stream is fueled by the difference in temperature between the arctic and the more moderate south. The greater the difference, the more powerful the jet stream.
When the jet stream is strong, it’s relatively stable. It can just plow right through any high-pressure systems that pop up in its path, and the Midwest keeps its shield. But the Arctic is warming like crazy, so the temperature differential can no longer keep the jet stream going strong. That means that high-pressure systems can easily nudge it one way or the other. If it gets nudged southward, then all of the cold air it’s holding back comes south with it.
@hominid Yes I do realize this and why I am not a fan of agenda-fueled, arm-chair scientific “reports” that have little basis in scientifically proven fact. This winter is just how I remember the winters here when I was a kid, the droughts and soaking rains are the same as I remember growing up here my whole life. An extreme event like I have seen my whole life does not make a trend. If someone like Al Gore says the sky is falling and then in his next breath says the sky is rising…I become skeptical when I can look outside and see otherwise
In winter time they call it mostly “climate change” or sometimes “climate disruption” and then in the summertime they call it “global warming”. In my opinion it’s BS mainly because global warming is actually not about the climate. It is all about destroying capitalism. The climate has always been changing for the last >4 billion years and will continue to do so no matter what we do weather we like it or not. It is up to us as with all other animals and plants past and present to either adapt to climate change or become extinct.
I read that the sun goes through phases as it expands, and obviously, this affects the planets around it. Some scientists say that what we experience is normal. Others say that as far as pollution goes and its consequences on the ozone layer, we should have tried to reduce the pollution about 50 years ago to have some kind of hope, and it’s now too late.
But please don’t quote me, as I know nothing of science or weather, just parroting away some shit I read somewhere.
I wouldn’t know which is true or false. I wish I did though. :/
What I CAN vouch for though, is that for the last few years, meteorologists here in Québec say that the Winters we’ve been having recently barely achieve the norm of what they’re ’‘naturally’’ supposed to achieve. This is in respect to the amount of snow we’ve been getting, which we apparently don’t have that much of, however the COLD itself has been setting records in a few places in Canada. Not sure what it all entails. :/ I mean come on, cold records up in Canada, who woulda thunk it eh?
I also noticed that besides some fucking ATROCIOUS heat waves during the Summers, which last for about a month, the rest of our recent Summers have been kind of mild and rainy. Seems normal to me, since Québec is a humid province, but the heat waves can’t be normal…but really, I don’t know. Global warming, yay or nay?
Frankly told, in all the places which I’ve lived in my life, weather has often been screwy and hardcore, up to the point that I would never know where to point out some significant element pointing to its abnormality, if one exists.
TLDR, my opinion is, I have no fucking idea, and I am not an arrogant person, but I will venture to say that, if something is fucking up on the planet, I don’t have that many problems believing that we are the cause, or at least a significant part of it. Now give me lurve or fry in Hell, sack mothers!
@Symbeline GA…Since you wielded “atrocious” in your answer with such finesse, I really wanted to bestow you with much as much lurve as possible, but the truckload of lurve was hard to pull off due to the weather but I was able to arrange for a pallet of lurve to be delivered to your door tomorrow
Climate change is occurring around the world, not just in North America. Most of academia is preparing students for worsening climate changes to come. Alternative energy sources are being studied and explored. Urban planners are developing areas that are more sustainable for our environmental needs and in consideration of conservation techniques. With exponential growth in populations around the world, its pull on our environmental safeguards, have caused this severe climate change. I’d like to believe that Global Warming is just bunk, but the evidence is too strong. For example we’ve seen snow and record breaking temps in the far South, droughts and wildfires out West, massive hurricanes on the East Coast. I do realize that these weather patterns have been seen before, but not on the severity or scale as seen today. Not to mention the weather catastrophes happening around the world. I’d like to be considered informed and not stuck with my head in the sand… So I beg the question, “What if Global Warming is REAL? And human consumptive behavior is causing it?
In country NSW Australia where I live, we have just had the hottest summer for a long time. It has been horrible. Do I believe in global warming/climate change/whatever the current trendy terminology is? No. I’ve been alive long enough to have watched climate go in cycles. The summer when my youngest son was born (January/February 1991) was every bit as hot and dry as the one we’ve just had. In between, we’ve had hot and not-so-hot ones. Have our winters got colder? Last winter, we didn’t even have a frost, which is very unusual for inland Australia. It was a very mild winter.
I am skeptical about climate change for a number of reasons, but mainly because the so called scientists mock and deride the few who are brave enough to disagree, and risk being excluded from the scientific community. If it were real, why would they not open their science up to scrutiny and free debate? Surely that is what science is all about. It appears that they have invested too much of their credibility in it to admit that they might be wrong.
I might be wrong, but at the moment I remain a skeptic.
Cruiser I don’t know about the credibility of all the information gleaned from the Internet. Being in a MPA program I’m mandated to use scholarly journals or peer-previewed articles. But according to National Geographic (http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/big-thaw/) global warming is very real and it is reflected in the rapid decrease of habitat for various endangered species, due to severe climate change associated with global warming. This site also discusses the various glaciers that are decreasing in size! I still beg the question, “What if all these scientists are right, and we do nothing to decrease the environmental impacts?”
@sujenk7422 The problem I have is that the hand wavers today are using recent trends to push legislation that has no historical basis in being anything more than a reaction to changes in the environment that have similarly happened many times over throughout time.
This very glacier you referred to was the size it is today merely 6,000 years ago. I wonder who the people then were trying to pin the blame for the shrinking of this same glacier back then.
As I recall it stated that it took thousands of years to build this glacier and only 25 years to destroy! The empirical evidence studied 25 years of melting and considering our level of information technology, I’d say they’re right. Unfortunately, IT was limited in the Ice Age… I suppose a person must believe what they will, but in the end their beliefs don’t exclude them from responsibility in consumptive behavior and destroying the environment. The same can be said about legislation to reform banking practices, nobody wanted to believe our banking industry would destroy people’s lives merely for the sake of extreme profits. But beliefs were wrong and the banking industry did destroy lives and livelihoods. Remember the 2008 recession? I only suggest we look beyond the propaganda pushed by corporations and corporate magnets, because in the end, it’s their butts they’re protecting…
It is a bit sad that the sensational attention wasn’t given in a timely fashion in the past, and now when individuals learn from that experience and want to be proactive now, naysayers and others want to keep things ‘status quo’! Status quo will soon expire…
What a lot of people don’t understand is, the extreme cold is caused by global warming. Global warming does not mean the world gets tropical weather. The planet’s weather systems depend on MANY various factors to be stable. These include water temperatures, and currents. How much sunlight absorbed, and how much reflected has an effect. Condition of the atmospheric layers has a huge effect. There are numerous things which must remain in balance. Global warming tips any one, two ir fifteen of these factors out of balance, and the result is not warmth, it’s change; radical, extreme, long term change.
It takes the combined studies and findings of geologists, meteorologists, oceanographers, and more to piece together the causes, effects, and expectations.
Without taking in the total picture, or at least a few chunks of it, people really can’t speak effectively regarding global warming, which is the beginning of, total climate change.
Here is a very miniaturized example. Take an ice cube out of the frizzer and put it on the counter. It will be dry. Light a match, and place it on the ice cube. The heat will melt the ice just enough to put out the flame. Each will have an effect on the other. Note, the ice remains, the flame, and all it’s heat do not return, aven after taking it far away from the ice.
