Should you donate to charities that are on the US stock exchange?

Asked by Aster (20028points) March 14th, 2014

I donate to local soup kitchens and Goodwill; sometimes animal right’s groups. A lot of people donate to companies that are on the stock exchange such as St Jude’s Hospital.
Do you think your donation to St Jude’s would be useful for them or do they regularly have organizations donating hundreds of thousands of dollars per year ? I know all their tv advertising costs a small fortune. I love St Jude’s , the late Danny Thomas and Marlo Thomas. But would my $20 be needed?

I prefer to support local, non-profit organizations. Larger charities are often burdened by a huge bureaucracy and high salaries for the administrators. The idea of a for-profit charity seems like an oxymoron to me… they’re beholden to the shareholders as much – if not more – than the need they are supposed to be addressing.

St Judes Children’s Hospital is not a publicly traded company with shareholders. It is not the same as St Jude Medical, which is a company based in Minneapolis that sells cardiovascular medical devices.

St Jude’s Children’s Hospital is a non profit organization in Memphis, Tenn.

The two are not related.
