Why do so many women pose for pictures with their hands on their hips?
Also known as the “chicken wing pose.” This bothers me nearly as much as the dying “duck face” craze. I have a friend that simply can’t pose for a picture without both hands on her hips. I’ve also seen celebrities doing this.
Why do so many women pose for pictures this way? Do you do it? Is it an attempt to look slimmer or is it just a solution to the “where do I put my hands” dilemma?
It just looks so awkward to me!

It’s a power pose actually. Makes you seem confident and ass-kicky.
I agree, I don’t like it nor do I do it myself. I kinda liked the duck face for awhile though, some people look better scrunched up…lol
What’s the “duck face”?! Is it a woman pouting for the camera?
It’s a trick to help make you look slim in photos.
I wish the duck face would go away but I still see it every day on facebook.
I don’t know. I don’t do it. But it doesn’t bug me. The duck face is a different story
Hands on hips perks the boobs, squares the shoulders, emphasizes the waist and hips, and makes poser seem confident.
@filmfann I’m not sure how it can look unnatural and awkward and confident at the same time. I still say it looks stupid.
Just remember hand placement on the hips. Fingers to the front mean confidence. Fingers to the back means they want to be fucked in the ass.
I am not making this up.
I have no problem with it. I don’t make a habit of doing this, but I do have one pic of me with one hand on my hip, instead of both.
Also fuck the duck face. That’s the most terrible thing ever.
@filmfann Is that legit psychology or what?
Makes them look like a trophy, the posing losers trophy.
@Symbeline I read that years ago in the book The Right Stuff. Made quite an impression.
Hips make the woman. Posing may help to define the tapered waist, and the alluring swell of the hips.
It lifts and frames the breasts.
@Pachy I don’t think we even want to know @filmfann‘s amateur psychology interpretation of one hand fingers forward and one fist on the hip.
I think pretty much all posing is done to mask insecurity.
The duck face in particular gets on my nerves. Ungh. I sure hope you’re right in saying it’s dying out.
They are squishing their waists in like crazy with those hands! Imagine if men did that?
Thank you for giving me another complex. I do this. Not sure why.

@GloPro We can’t see your hips in your avatar!
There. Now I cannot be accused of trying to pose… I feel better :-)
Much better to be the snake woman who ate the wasp, @GloPro!
Hands on hips like the picture of Scarlet Johansen doesn’t bother me as long as it’s not joined by a cutesy head tilt!
@livelaughlove21 @Leanne1986 How should we pose? Don’t say we shouldn’t pose; they can’t all be candid shots. Although the candid pic tends to be my favorite. You can definitely see my fake smile vs. real.
@GloPro I’ve never posed with my hands on my hips, but I’ve been in many pictures. It doesn’t bother me if I see one picture of a person with their hands on their hips, but every picture? There are other things you can do with your hands. Google “Jennifer Aniston red carpet” just as one example. Most of the time her arms are hanging loosely by her sides and she looks fabulous.
@GloPro Obviously it’s completely up to you how you pose. I tend to have my arms by my side but to be honest I hate having to pose for a photo. My boyfriend is always taking pictures of me but I much prefer the ones he catches of me unawares, they tend to be much more flattering!
I hate people that are always taking pictures. Drives me nuts.
@livelaughlove21 He’s a photographer so it comes with the territory unfortunately (and we’re not talking iphone pictures here, oh no, nothing that subtle!!). I’m his favourite subject and that flatters me even if it does drive me crazy.
