Do you think that humans should have the right to legally sell their extra organs?

Asked by tekn0lust (1868points) July 1st, 2008

If so what would it take for you personally to sell an organ for which you have a backup?

I believe most developed countries have laws which prohibit the sale of human organs. Would you support or oppose the ability of a person to sell their organs?

No, because any sale of organs promotes the illegal harvesting of organs, promotes people taking advantage of the poor, and starts to place a dollar value on life.

I am against it, as it continues to promote the disparities between rich and poor. Using poor people as spare parts bothers me, as does the fact that most of the “donors” lack basic medical care at baseline.

For a more complete discussion of the ethics of organ donation, the New England Journal of Medicine recently ran a piece on this issue from living donors. Also, a recent panel at Harvard University was convened to discuss this issue. The AMA continues to oppose this as a viable option, and I agree with the AMA position.

Hear hear Marina, pretty much what I was going to say.

Not when they’re alive. Perhaps if someone is signed up to be an organ donor, they might ask a fee for their organs when they die. They would have the fee be given to their family.

@beast My fear, then, would be that people’s deaths would be hurried, not least by greedy heirs.

@Marina

Well, they just wouldn’t tell their relatives about it.

So who pays? The recipient?

I glanced through a list of questions, and honestly read “extra orgasms”. I thought “What? How?”

marinelife's avatar

@uno With your current point total as it is, you should just ask that it be frozen there forever.

I have an old Kimball Organ in storage that I wouldn’t mind selling. I don’t have two, though. Because of that it an extra one technically. But I would think that should be legal.

@uno: I wonder what’s on your mind…

I say, if you have EXTRA organs, you should be able to do what you want with them?

“disparities between rich and poor.” Are rich and poor two separate things? You can’t have one without the other.

You don’t even need extra organs. You can donate half your liver quite easily. (OK not easily but you’ll live, probably).
