What is the most memorable foreign film you have seen?

Asked by PhiNotPi (12686points) March 21st, 2014

Foreign films are often not as well-known as domestic films, but they can still be of the same quality. What is your favorite foreign film?

Although I have only seen a few foreign films, I would probably answer this question with Indochine, a French movie which deals with the start of the Vietnam war.

La Strada and 8–½ are two of my faves. Also the sci-fi films Timecrimes and La Jetee.

I have a lot, but I’m using this answer because I’m a big fan: A lot of martial arts movies are wonderful. The choreography, the acting, and the visualisation.

Not most martial arts movies, but the really epic ones like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. Donnie Yen is also known for these movies, with his most recent being Dragon. The Grandmaster is another incredible movie. Oh, and The Man from Nowhere.

The Swedish films for ”The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” were really good. So good, in fact, that when I saw a trailer for the American version, I wondered why they were remaking it so soon? A couple minutes later, I remembered that the ones we had watched were subtitled in English – I had honestly forgotten!!

Too many to list.
It’s the domestic films that suck here!

An UK zombie movie called The Dead. There are a lot of zombie movies out there, I’ve seen an incredible amount and I love them all. Good or bad, it’s my gig. Some stick out though, as did The Dead. Extremely well done and…actually, it’s creepy. They’re slow zombies, which are my favorite. Nice gore here and there, very simple story between two men simply trying to survive. The zombies have white eyes, which was odd, but otherwise they’re great zombies. Plus they used actual amputees for some of the zombies, which was extremely disturbing. All the more reason why it’s awesome.
I love when I find a zombie movie that sticks out, because I watch so many that sometimes I’m afraid I’ll never be impressed again.

Here’s a trailer for any zombie fan that might be interested. The Dead

I have to agree with @anniereborn, Downfall is the most memorable foreign film I have seen but memorable does not necessarily equate with favourite and such is the case in this instance, mind you I do think Downfall is an excellent film and well worth watching, just prepare to be disturbed.

@Hawaii_Jake Good call on Rashomon. I love that movie.

Another good one is Jason and the Argonauts.
