Oh no I feel a cold coming on what should I do?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) April 4th, 2014

I thought I felt a little something something in my throat when I woke up this morning, I figured it must have been the cold air last night. But now as it stands I can sort of feel something coming on in between the back of my nasal passage and before my mouth entrance.

Advice?

Sambucol.
Zicam.

I know it’s just this side of Voodoo, but I believe it works.

Hot bath, hot broth and to bed helps, too.

Sorry, you’re SOL. You can do some of the above suggestions, maybe, maaaaybe, lessen the symptoms a bit, but the virus already has a strangle hold on you by the time the first symptoms manifest.
I say, RIGHT NOW…megadose on some C’s, drink a big glass of water, take a hot, HOT, shower and go to bed! The old fashioned remedies are best. Rest, rest, rest, drink lots of fluids, and get some Nyquil asap. haha

Drink lots of fluids, stay warm, and sleep well tonight.

Gargle with hydrogen peroxide (dilute it with water about half and half).
Raw garlic and/or onion. Eat it raw.
Hot Toddy. (Honey and rum?)

Zicam. Water. Tea. Water. Orange. Soup. Zicam. Water. Repeat.

Aspirin, lots of fluids and bed rest. Always worked for me.

I vote for Zicam too. Plus zinc and Vitamin C, Plus a quart of hot and sour soup, Tom Yum, with extra ginger for dinner and for lunch.

You’re cooked, buddy. All you can do is make yourself as comfortable as possible, rest, fluids, and ride it out. If you want to bother with all the suggestions above, they can’t hurt. And they might keep you distracted. A sore throat can be treated topically with hard candies, hot tea, lemon and honey, and a salt-water gargle (1 t. salt to 1 C. warm water).

Hope your little boy doesn’t catch it. Wash your hands a thousand times a day.

do a vegetable juice fast for a week. Don’t eat anything else. The super juice is.

10 carrotscarrots, 1 head celery , 16 inch cucumber. 5 beets , 100 g spinach, handful parsley, ½ grapefruit , 16 mini apples. push it fresh through a juicer.

It will be gone in no time.

^^ After a week of doing anything, his cold will be gone.

Gargle with salt water/mouthwash. A warm cup of herbal tea can offer immediate, soothing relief for a sore throat. Make sure your body is well rested so you can get better sooner.

Buy some decongestant/antihystemine. The real deal from behind the pharmacy counter. Not prescription, but they control it now. Advil can help with discomfort, but the major discomfort will be the congestion.

In my opinion don’t buy Zicam. It does not cure a cold, period. It might relieve some symptoms for some people, but it also has left people permanently less able to smell.

If you have a real cold it will last a week. That’s the rule.

ALL of you recommending aspirin, you do know to never give aspirin to a child for a cold right? I know the OP is not a child, I just want to make sure.

Wasn’t zicam pulled by the FDA as it caused irreversible onosmia (loss of smell).

Get off the internet, you might spread the virus.

Zicam is available in different applications. I think there were problems with the nasal swabs. I like Sambucol much better and if’s strictly oral, dissolve on your tongue.

@lightlyseared I didn’t know that. All of that stuff doesn’t work side effect or not, it is all a farce. Nothing slows down or eliminates the common cold. If Zicam was pulled good. Airborne had to pay some huge fine if I remember correctly, because it’s claims were false. Totally made up fantasy to sell some vitamins.

My advice is to gargle 3 times in a row at least twice a day with 50/50 warm water and vinegar for the next 2 days. Gargle long and vigorously to loosen the phlegm in the back of your throat that is a breeding ground for these germs that are now trying to make you sick. The acidity of the vinegar should make the PH in your throat inhospitable for these bacteria “germs”.

It is yucky to say the least but I do this every time I sense a cold or flu knocking on my door and have not missed a day of work in over 10 years.

You can’t do anything to make the cold go away but there’s plenty to help alleviate the symptoms. OTC meds of course, but also drinking plenty of fluids. Hot drinks with honey are soothing on the throat. Honey is also a natural antiseptic. A shot of whisky or rum in the bedtime drink will help you sleep.

It’s a cold. You’re going to be freakin’ miserable, there’s no real way around that. I use colds as a time to catch up on all the dumb crap I’ve been putting off. If you feel miserable anyway, make it useful. That frees more of your well time for happier stuff.
