Mods, how many times can a jelly attack before getting banned?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23800points) April 12th, 2014

Most of the time I don’t intend to attack (except for some occasions in spam threads), but somehow my words are so harsh that my responses get flagged. Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many more (seemingly) flame responses I can post before I get banned here…

I think the mods will give you a stern warning you are on your way to being kicked off the site before it actually happens. Depends what it is of course, how bad it was.

When they mod your response do you see what you did wrong, or is it confusing to you?

@JLeslie In some spam threads I clearly see what I did wrong. That’s why I’m more careful when commenting on spam threads recently. But there are some occasions that the mods leave me confused because I have no intention to attack. For example, in one thread about why Fluther seems to be so slow, @ucme joked that he did something to Dr. Jelly just before Fluther slowed down. I joked back, claiming to be an FBI agent and forced @ucme to confess what he did. My respond was modded as personal attack, though I had put a smiley in it…

WHEN JELLIES ATTACK

CWOTUS's avatar

There have been some cases where people had real concerns (or were paranoid, or maybe both) that things that they said were “being reported to the authorities”, and left Fluther angrily for that reason.

Since ucme is a Brit – with a good sense of humor – it’s unlikely that he would be fazed by a claim that a jelly claiming to be an FBI agent was on his case. But the mod who removed your response may not have had the same sense of humor, or may have been sensitized to the earlier incident/s, and decided to err on the side of caution.

It’s probably smarter, while joking around, to claim to be an agent of a non-existent police or investigative force, such as the Galactic Police or Star Fleet, so that there can be no question about whether or not you’re joking.

And use the tilde: ~ to indicate sarcasm. Smileys can be misinterpreted as simply bad punctuation.

Some mods are overzealous. Did you PM ucme to explain you were joking? He has one of the best senses of humors around, my guess he knew and was not the one to flag it if it was flagged. Things get modded without ever having been flagged sometimes.

@CWOTUS The incident happened before I knew about the ~
But thanks for the tips anyway.

@JLeslie I never PM ucme, because I was so sure that he knew I was joking…

42 isn’t that the answer to everything?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@rojo how did you get such a number?

JLeslie's avatar

42 is one of my favorite numbers.

You will know way before you ever get close to crossing the line. If the policies are still the same you will get a time-out first. Like a week before you can post again. You will know if you need to worry.

@Mimishu1995 I’ve never seen you attack anyone here before.

But there are rules. Once those are broken, the user will be warned and otherwise dealt with. If one respects the rules, everything goes, really. :/

@CWOTUS And use the tilde: ~ to indicate sarcasm. Smileys can be misinterpreted as simply bad punctuation.

I refuse to believe this.

This reminds me of the penalty box on answerbag, I was put in there only when i’d more or less left the site & posted deliberately crude questions/answers.
This pleased me greatly, for it gave justification to my merciless mockery of an anus of a site.

@Mimishu1995 I have no memory of the incident you mention here, but it sounds very trivial to me & certainly not something i’d ever flag.

@Mimishu1995 – We still remove attack comments on spam or trolling posts, which is why we prefer that people just flag them and don’t comment at all. Similarly, when someone sees other violations of guidelines, it is preferred that you flag them and otherwise not reference the errors within the post.

When someone comments on a post that we remove as an attack, we have to remove those as well since they no longer have a context. This was the case in your example – your comment was removed for “other” reasons, because it was in reference to a moderated post.

Leaving a public comment in the threads about something that needs correction or moderation only creates a bigger mess for us to clean up, which makes the thread look bad after all the nonsense has been pulled. Please just flag it and move on. If it is within the 10-minute editing period, one could always send a Private Message to the Jelly who posted it to bring it to their attention so they might catch it in time to edit it.

It deppends on the jelly & the wording, some flamers here get away with it often because they’re smart about it.

@Espiritus_Corvus meant well (as always), but those underline references play hell with Fluther’s ability to embed URLs, so in this case, try the TinyURL instead.

Or maybe this is it. I just can’t tell with those references sometimes.

@Mimishu1995 It may not be that your posts are attacking but that your humor is a little off because of cultural or linguistic reasons. (And some of us who think we are wits, may be off for other reasons.) PMing with a Mod where you are modded might be the best way to learn more.

The tilde ~
I just learned about the tilde yesterday or the day before. Some people need to just change their avatars to a great big tilde picture ~

Berserker's avatar

Man, all of a sudden this tilde thing is going viral around here.

@GloPro I love it! Great idea.
