How can we change which trades can apprentice?
Like professions like psychology. How can we make psychology as a paid apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship implies that you won’t be paid. Your payment, as it were, is learning the trade.
@Darth_Algar In Alberta you get paid while you work to get your journeyman’s certification.
I think the laws should be changed. Companies (maybe with the exception of non profits) should not get free labor just because someone is in school. They should have to pay at least minimum wage.
Apprentice electricians and plumbers are actually paid pretty well here. Electricians start around 12 a hour and you usually get a extra buck a hour for every 400 hours of your apprenticeship. It is all through the IBEW (unions are evil) so your millage may vary.
And can you even apprentice as a psychologist? That seems like a university thing.
Actually, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists do have apprenticeships of a sort- it’s called internship and supervised hours. A Psychologist in California needs 4,000 hours of supervised counseling of clients. Under Supervision, they are not allowed to accept direct payment from a client, but only from payments made to the Supervising Psychologist.
And, they have to pass a licensing exam.
Medical Doctors go through an apprenticeship too. Its as an intern until you graduate from medical school, and then Residency.
So, it’s not just trades that have “apprentices.”
(I was a Steamfitter apprentice for a couple summers while in college. Made great money for a 19 and 20 yr old.
@zenvelo :: The Psychologist vs. Psychiatrist thing still confuses the shit out of me.
Apprenciceships are generally for trades that do not have or require a route through university programs. Industrial trades are structured and paid. Other examples would be in crafts such as lutherie where you could learn yourself but it is just better if you can get an old pro to show you the ropes. These are informal and unpaid. I see no reason to change anything.
@johnpowell Psychiatrists are M.D.s and are licensed to prescribe drugs. They may do some counseling, but most do not.
Clinical Psychologists are qualified to evaluate and test clients (like the Rorschach or the Minnesota Multi-Phasic) and provide counseling, and also make recommendations and referrals to a Psychiatrist for medication.
Thanks for the clarification.
