Have you ever seen anyone clean an ice machine?

Asked by Aster (20028points) April 22nd, 2014

Some tests revealed ice machines to be more contaminated than toilet water. Have you ever cleaned or seen anyone clean an ice machine?

I think my mom cleaned the ice machine when ever it emptied. She was rare, for the industry, she cleaned everything even the powdered coffee machines.

I have cleaned an ice machine. You don’t even want to know. Your biggest hope comfort is that hopefully they are getting fresh ice off of the top. If you’re at a banquet or big event where they’re digging from sides or bottom just go without ice. Trust me, you don’t want to know.

I should have said, “commercial ice machines.” I didn’t mean the one in our refrigerators that I’ve never cleaned in my life.

I saw the ice machine cleaned several times at work. Every time it was cleaned it was because there was visible disgusting crud on the ice. Disgusting. It’s really a very archaic and inefficient system, especially if it’s a chest type ice maker that everyone accesses all day with a scoop.

How does ice get dirty? It’s just frozen water.

It’s a buildup of algae, mold, fungus and bacteria on the surfaces that water condenses on. This includes the cube trays. Eventually that shit starts to slough off into the bin. You’ll see it floating in your drink.

Exactly what @GloPro said. You can imagine what the water and ice at the bottom of the bin look like after that crap starts falling in. Add to that any hair, fuzz, skin cells, dandruff, etc., etc. that falls in and fails to be consumed with your tea.
