Is Cliven Bundy's status as an anti-government hero going down?

Asked by DominicX (28808points) April 24th, 2014

Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who has been praised by conservatives and other people wary of the federal government for his refusal to pay the Bureau of Land Management, has recently come under fire for racist remarks about black people having “more freedom” as slaves:

So…

Were the remarks actually racist? Or is he just being misunderstood?

For those who support Bundy, does this change your opinion of him? Certain Republican politicians are distancing themselves from him, including Rand Paul.

Oh, jeez. Anyone that that man is a hero for is not someone that I ever want to meet.

If you have to ask, ‘Was that actually racist?’ is a pretty good indicator that it was. This guy is an ignorant hick who wants to use the federal constitution of the government of the USA to defend himself but refuses to recognize said government. In my mind, he is typical of the white supremacist male who thinks the world owes him a living and when anything goes wrong in his life, it is always someone else’s fault. My litmus test for such questions is to reverse it. If those ranchers were black, what do you think the reaction would be?

It’s incredible to me that anyone has taken this guy seriously.

Anti-American Bigot Thief deadbeat.

The fact that this guy has a huge fan base among conservatives demonstrates the real crisis of just basic common sense currently raging on the right. And there leading the parade of those advocating freeloading off the government (by half witted white folks) is Sean Hannity. As for poor Bundy’s views on black folks, here’s an apt apology.

His remarks were racist and insensitive..i live south of the Mason Dixon line and his remarks sound similar to what many of the Republicans here in Maryland will say about African Americans in private conversations. these people think that pre civil rights America is a utopian society.

Apologies if you can’t watch outside the United States.

It’s hard to see how one can misconstrue “negros were better off as slaves”.

That will only make him more popular with real conservatives.

Bundy. Al Bundy’s kid? I thought his name was Bud. Maybe he’s related more to Ted Bundy!

Sorry, I know nothing about this guy but the Bundy connection was too rich to pass up.

Mea culpa

His racism won’t hurt his popularity. It’s a treasured value among conservatives.

Maybe if he checks into rehab.
