What does a bluebird egg look like?
I was cleaning out my bluebird houses and I noticed an egg on the ground. It was broken. The house near it only had an old nest in it, no new activity. Any thoughts?

Here is l. to r. to scale, an example of the eastern blue bird (EABL) egg, the tree swallow (TRES) egg and the house wren (HOWR) egg.
Some nests and eggs Color variation is due to cameras, lenses, lighting, and processing and not egg color.
No doubt it was an Eastern Bluebird.
I hope that they will be lured by the clean boxes to nest. There is almost nothing more cheerful than several eastern blue birds sitting on a branch or a deck railing in the sunshire.
I need to clean the bird house immediately behind my house. Thanks for reminding me! I think the last ‘blue birds’ I had nesting there were actually Indigo Buntings.
Lucky, lucky you. I want to see an Indigo Bunting before I hit the great beyond.
I saw one on my feeder, most beautiful thing ever.
I’m certain that’s what it was, @gailcalled. Perhaps it’s just your neck of the woods, as they seem plentiful here. (being from Missouri, I was even disappointed that it wasn’t a Missouri Blue Bird.)
They’ve only nested on the back patio once, that I know of. I’ll clean the box out tomorrow and maybe I’ll have some snaps to send you.
I am encouraged because @Adirondackwannabe is essentially in my neck of the woods.
What was in the feeder? Sunflower seeds or some exotic mashed bug soufflé?
@ibstubro: That would be wonderful but at the same time would make me crazed with jealousy.
I saw these guys on May. 1, as I rounded a turn in the road. Luckily the road had so many potholes I was driving about 8 mph.
What nuisances, @gailcalled! Canadian geese are literally nuisance birds around here. Now that the Mississippi is up they are out in the streets downtown. Lots of blue herons, too, but they stay to the shallows.
I did see a beautiful huge influx of pelicans this spring. I keep thinking I’ll take my camera with me to town and get a picture of the tiny little ducks by the river. I don’t recall seeing them around here before. About ½ the size of a Mallard.
Oh, and one pair of swans – last week.
@gailcalled I’m not sure what drew it in. At the time I had sunflower seeds, thistle seeds, suet with meal worms in it, an orange, and a hummingbird feeder out. He was just sitting on the feeder, not eating.
