What have we learned from the use of MRIs?

I have searched the Web for this and found it difficult to get a simple direct answer. I would divide my question into two parts. Firstly, what kinds of disorders can be detected using MRIs? Secondly, what do MRIs tell us about the way the brain works? I am not looking into any detailed descriptions, just an overview of the kinds of things that we have learned.
