Would you consider having nine back surgeries ?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 3rd, 2014

I’ve never had back surgery . But someone on the internet said his wife had nine of them and “it hasn’t worked out well.” Has a friend , relative or have you had or considered having eight to nine back surgeries and , if so, would you consider having that many?

I was just talking to a guy today (I’m at a conference) and he is 65 and has had six back surgeries. He said after the last one, he has zero pain, so I guess it was what I would consider successful. I am guessing that if someone has had nine back surgeries, each one was presented with the hope or the promise of a better quality of life, thus, the person (or the patient, or the patient person LOL) decided to try one more time. Before they knew it, one more time, one more time, one more time became nine.

Nine surgeries!? I can’t imagine it. I had a back surgery 30 years ago which necessitated months of hard physical therapy. Six months later I was still in pain, and my surgeon (a highly regarded one) advised a second surgery. But after talking with a man who’d had three back surgeries with the same doctor and now could barely walk, I declined further surgery. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I’ve rarely had back pain since.

Depending on the severity of the pain, yes.

Depends on my age, the likelihood of success, and the amount of pain. There isn’t one single answer.

Yes, if somebody else is footing the bill, and my back is broken that badly.

It would depend on my age, what the surgery was for, and the expected outcome from the surgery. Some back surgeries are more invasive than others and have much tougher recoveries.
