Do you practice oil pulling and what were your results?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 3rd, 2014

I don’t know how new this procedure is for bodily and oral health but people are starting to talk about oil pulling . This is when you take an edible oil, such as coconut oil, and squish a teaspoon through your mouth for fifteen minutes then spit it out. It is supposed to whiten your teeth and do other great things for the body. What is your opinion of it? http://wellnessmama.com/7866/oil-pulling-for-oral-health/

Ugh. The latest scam. Remember queen bee pollen? The maple syrup lemon juice cleanse?
Kambucha mushroom beverage (the fungus amungus)?

I swear someone asked this about a month ago.

It looks to be essentially the same as using mouthwash, but generally less effective. The few studies so far done, even when done by a sympathetic and possibly biased researcher, show nothing beyond the benefits of mechanical swishing: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/oil-pulling-your-leg/. I’d use Listerine.

No I don’t. But then I could care less about how white my teeth are.

When I see people with unnaturally bleached white teeth I just wonder how much enamel they stripped away and how much life they took away from their teeth.

I do however eat coconut oil. I cook with it!
