Out of This World (Another World) and Star Control 2.

I can’t decide between Half-Life: 2, Battlefield: 1942, Sim City 2000, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and Unreal Tournament 2004—maybe not a genre definer, but a personal favorite.

The problem is, there are several classes of games to look at (strategy, fps, rpg, and the sub-genres of these). For instance, even though HL2 and 1942 are both FPS’s they couldn’t be less alike except in that both were so amazing and visionary. Spore could be it, though, when it comes out.

delirium's avatar

I’ll pass my judgement when spore comes out, but I will say that my hopes are high.

zarnold's avatar

yeah, but if the creature creator is any indication of how it will be, I’ll be blown away

delirium's avatar

mm, ditto. I have wasted wayyy too many hours on that thing. And I sculpt a lot in my spare time so I now have my favorite creatures sitting on my piano.

willbrawn's avatar

I’ll also have to say StarCraft. I was addicted to that game for so long. Computers games came to life for me. As well as the original Diablo. It was my first RPG. Epic for its time.

Halo 3. Not because of the single player but because it is the culmination of everything that is good about FPS games. Mulitplayer great, and forge and saved films make it one of the most innovative games ever. It is the only FPS that I didn’t stop playing in 2 months (sorry Call of Duty 4, I got bored after an all-nighter of leveling up). I played Halo 2 from the day it came out to the day Halo 3 came out, and Halo 3 is undoubtably better than Halo 2. But in reality, everyone’s gaming prefrence is different, so there is no such thing as the best video game ever. But there should be a hall of fame.

And seriously, why the hell does everyone love Half-life? I’m not hating on it, and the graphics and physics were WAYYY ahead of their time, but now the bar has been raised.

@playthebanjo Hell. Fucking. Yes.

EDIT: Oh shit! I forgot about Metal Gear Solid 4!!! But that furthers what I said about no such thing as a best game ever. But since MGS4 lacks innovations such as forge and saved films, I stick with my first choice. And for the people who read all of this, sorry for the long post.

if you check out my library you can see that i own quite a lot of the mentioned titles, and yes, that fact makes me happy :)

Insaniquarium (which “fishy” reminded me of). Days of my life have gone to this little game.

Not supported on mac though, so I haven’t played it in a while. :(

El_Cadejo's avatar

@monsoon DAMN YOU FOR POSTING THAT. I used to play that stupid game a lot, i couldnt tell you why, it was just addicting then i forgot about it. Thanks for bringing the addiction back lol.

monsoon's avatar

@uberbatman, I know, right? No game more addicting on any console that I can think of (excepted perhaps by the sims).

chutterhanban's avatar

@ fortris: good point—there’s no way that this could be answered in one game. Anyone who is nerdy enough to answer this question undoubtedly has some level of an addiction problem when it comes to video games… :) (including myself, of course). So, it just comes down to whatever is running my life at the given time!

Halo 3
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Any takers!?!?!?

iwamoto's avatar

chutter, have you ever played the other zelda games? personally i like ocarina of time a lot better then twilight princess…just like i played 1 level of halo 3 and just didn’t like it, am i just too old ?

chutterhanban's avatar

@ iwamoto: I have only played Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess… I do happen to still like the latter much better. I’m a sucker for better gameplay!

As far as Halo 3 goes, I think you need to play multiplayer on live or with friends in order to really be able to enjoy the missions. Multiplayer gives you a better feel for the weapons, movement, etc. and you become more familiar with Halo 3 specifically (since it is much different than its predecessors). By the way, I didn’t really like the first level either, but I’ll say it gets pretty crazy on legendary! Plus, I promise the game gets better as you go along! Just to clarify, it’s Halo 3 on XBOX Live that puts this game on the top!

monsoon's avatar

Can I just say damn whoever posted that fishy link. I have things that I really need to be getting done.

shockvalue's avatar

MUAHAHAH! Have you beaten it yet? The ending is pretty good.

beast's avatar

@caijerseyboi

How to you like God of War 2? I just ordered it yesterday.

iwamoto's avatar

GoW II was a lot better then it’s predecessor, it felt a whole lot more polished, more complete, more vivid, just a button bashing roller coaster through mythology, however, it’s on of many games on my shelf in the “play it, finish it in 2 days, let it collect dust”

caijerseyboi's avatar

@beast
God of war 2 was good. the game play was great, play it on the hardest mode and you’ll really see why i love. This game really develops your hand eye coordination. If you can beat this game on titan mode you can beat any game.

iwamoto's avatar

i think gow 2 is a bit too casual for that statement, if you can beat games like Dodonpachi, Contra on the NES or ninja gaiden black on their hardest, then you’re pretty far on your way..

El_Cadejo's avatar

i agree with iwamoto GoW2 wasnt really all that hard. Go play ninja gaiden. Or if you want really hard and your into schmups go beat Ikaruga on its hardest difficulty then get back to me.(its only got 5 levels)

iwamoto's avatar

aah, ikaruga, man, i mean, i finished Dodonpachi on normal and that was a pain, you know what, thanks jackson, let me go and purchase ikaruga on XBLA!

shockvalue's avatar

Ninja Gaiden II has been kicking my ass.

iwamoto's avatar

mine too, right now i’m at the russian level (believe that’s stage 8) and those damn rockets keep kicking my ass…

monsoon's avatar

Any one remember Barney Carnage? My first favorite game I think, when I was a wee lass.

Hobbes's avatar

Na na na na na na na na Katamari Damacy!

iwamoto's avatar

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is the greatest game ever I have play. It’s simply masterpiece where no other video games can be compare to this game.
