Why?

Asked by GloPro (8409points) May 18th, 2014 from iPhone

Do you ever just ask yourself Why?

Have you endured the “why” of a two year old non-stop?

So I ask you, jellies, WHY?

Because I’m a human, and that’s what humans do. We’re ‘pecial like that. Don’t ask me why.

I have a feeling that sometimes people ask ’‘why’’ out of frustration and confusion, rather than to actually seek an answer.

I think @Symbeline nailed it.

Glopro, I ask it all the time, yet no answer. My bad!

Symbeline, I have never known a person who asks why when frustrated or confused. I am not being an antagonist but I really haven’t seen one such person.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Sure you have @Khajuria9. “Why is this happening?” “Why did this happen to me?” Someone loses a loved one unexpectedly and people will cry out “Why me?” Or “Why do bad things happen to good people?”

Thanks Dutchess for trying to answer the question on her behalf. Yes, I might have but actually I had a different perspective about the question being asked.
Thanks for answering though.

I believe I have answered this just fine. Didn’t think I’d have to whip up any examples.

@Dutchess_III is completely right. Who hasn’t heard, thought, or uttered the phrase, “What the hell?” When sitting in a traffic jam, waiting in a long line at the grocery store, getting home with your to go order and finding out that it’s wrong, waiting on hold for minutes or hours on the telephone, only to be hung up on in the end.

Why is all of this happening??? Why? Why? Why? There never seems to be a reasonable answer.

Symbeline, I never said a word about it not being answered correctly. Your answer is really good, its my mistake, I had a different vision of the question itself, sorry about any trouble there.

The four year old is not asking why in an existential way. Those whys drive me crazy.

I ask why out of frustration and confusion. I don’t expect an answer, but it would be great to get one. Sometimes the answer doesn’t present itself for a long, long time.

Khajuria9's avatar

The whys are indicative of the level of inquisitiveness of a person, when asked sincerely.

I was at a Red Lobster once. They had live lobsters in an aquarium up front where people were waiting to be seated. Their claws were rubberbanded to keep them from fighting. There was a two year old asking, “Why why why,” and Mom and Dad did their best to answer.
Then the kid says, “Why do some of the lobster have blue rubber bands and why do some have yellow?”
Mom says, “Because some are boys and some are girls.” SCORE! I’ll never forget that. :D

“What do you think?”

^ Shuts those four-year-olds up.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Nothing shuts them up, LOL! I kind of like their questions. I do.

My daughter got me once. She was about 4. We were stopped for a train. It finally passed, but just as the bars were starting to lift, another came along, so again we waited and waited.
That train finally passed and as we started over the tracks she asked, “Why isn’t there another train coming, Mommy?” ....... Uh…...

Why not? If you don’t try it how do you know?
