Have you ever competed in a cooking competition?

Asked by GloPro (8409points) May 19th, 2014 from iPhone

A ‘Wing Ding’, ‘Chili Cookoff’, or a ‘Rib Fest’?

Did you have a super-secret recipe/special ingredient? Family recipe? Just something random from a cookbook because you liked the cause?
Did you place, or even win?

We’ll want your recipes, if you care to share!

Never tried my hand at it but I’ve been to the barbecue fest in Lake Placid over the 4th of July multiple times. My only recipe is for a baloney sandwich.

What an exceptional question!

If I could find a shrimp cook-off I’d be there in a heartbeat. To eat, of course, not compete.

Last weekend I went to a chili cook off. I should have entered; some of those people should be ashamed of themselves and what they call ‘chili.’

I voted for the Mustang Ranch (yes, THAT Mustang Ranch). When I gave them my vote card I told them it was a shame I’d only eat 2 ounces of their delicious chili a year. I don’t usually frequent whore houses, no matter how good the food is.

I can hear the conversations: “Honey, I only went there for the FOOD, I swear!”

Cheese whiz and baloney. Gross.

I have not, but a friend of mine was in a chili cookoff every year and won all the time. Apparently the secret is to use the finest cuts of steak (to which the girls at the Mustang Ranch would probably attest) and cut them into bite size chunks (which the girls might not like).

I want to go 15 places with your steak answer, all of them really bad.

The chefs at the Ranch are men. They must hate their jobs. The food really does have a good reputation. Everybody’s mouths are always full.

Who’s mouths and with what, he asks innocently.
Edit Yeah, and if you believe the innocently part I have a bridge to sell too.

Once. I was 10 and in 4-H. I won a blue ribbon for my fruit salad presentation.

I think it would be fun to try some time. Maybe a Pillsbury Bakeoff.

I entered a chili cook off when I worked for a aerospace company in Greenbelt Maryland adjacent to the NASA Goddard space flight center. i came in first place out of 34 entries and I winged it without any specific recipe. .i never use a set recipe for chili.

I can’‘t believe you never entered another one after taking 1st place, @1TubeGuru.

One of the local cook-off here was charging $15 admission. I hope they were at least providing free beer!
