Do you have a favorite musical play or movie, and a favorite song or scene from said musical?

Asked by Dan_Lyons (5532points) May 22nd, 2014

I have so many, but Man of La Mancha (The Peter O’Toole / Sophia Loren version) tops my list today, along with this scene.

“Goodbye May Seem Forever” from The Fox and the Hound. I’m almost crying right now just thinking about it.

I have 2. Both Disney movies. Sword in the Stone and 101 Dalmations.

I got a kick out of Buffy the vampire and House’s musical
Episodes. House was very visually stimulating. I hardly ever watch musicals intentionally.

I’m such a saddo. I loved Mama Mia. Everytime I watch the bit where they get ready for the wedding and sing ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’, I snivel. Then when Donna and Sam sing ‘Winner Takes it all’, I am in pieces. Even though Pierce Brosnan can’t sing.

I also love Man of La Mancha, but the Placido Domingo version.

My other favorites plays are:
• Company
• Rent
• Guys and Dolls

Aside from the plays themselves, I love the soundtracks.

As for musical movies, I really enjoyed Frozen recently and wouldn’t be surprised if they made a stage production of it.

@cookieman Let it go! Let it go! Can’t hold back anymore!

I actually do not remember seeing this movie. Your question just prompted this response.

I have limited internet access, or I would spend the day posting clips from Rocky Horror, Evita, and Annie. Bye Bye Birdie, Fiddler and Beetlejuice. I’m more about music than musical, but I’ve got a trove of answers in my brain.

I just found this little bit of bizarreness and laughed until tears were literally streaming down my face.

Crap. I forgot to mention “A Chorus Line”, an icon. Or that Fossy/Minnelli treat. A STAR IS BORN. etc, etc.

My favorite musical is “Hair”, and the Flesh Failures is my favorite song from that remarkable musical.
My favorite song from any musical, though, is Somewhere Over The Rainbow

I am a pretty big musical fan. It’s really hard to choose, but I think one is Little Bird from Fiddler on the Roof. Another song I like from Fiddler is Sunrise, Sunset.

One of the best scenes in musicals is this scene from South Pacific featuring the song “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught”.

Oh, if we’re choosing a song, I’d pick Dulcinea from Man of La Mancha.

@Mimishu1995: “Let it Go” is a great song (and I love Idina Menzell), but it has been played to death sadly. seriously, let it go already

I love ‘40s and ‘50s musicals (I was raised on ‘em), but the one that comes immediately to mind is the 1956 movie version of “The King and I.” Every scene is perfect, but I think March of the Siamese Children is my favorite. Not only does it succinctly define the main characters and serve as a major plot transition, it’s also so beautifully shot, acted and choreographed, and oh that music!

I grew up watching Disney movies (on VHS, the memories!), and it’s really hard to pick favorites. I remember really liking Mulan because of how strong she was and getting freaked out at the dream Dumbo has when he’s drunk. Two great songs from those movies respectively: “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” and “Pink Elephants on Parade”.
I saw Wicked at the Providence Performing Arts Center and it was pretty cool. I think that’s the only play I’ve seen outside of my high school. I loved their parting song “For Good” and found a piano arrangement of it that I learned. I’m gonna go and play it right now.

I love musicals, but I would say that my most favorite is The Sound of Music, and I’m very keen the scene where Captain Von Trapp finds Maria in the gazebo and they sing I Must Have Done Something Good. I can’t find an actual movie version of the scene. I think Youtube has blocked it, but here’s the song. I pretty much love every number in The Sound of Music.

I also love Singing in the Rain. There’s a plethora of great scenes from that musical. My favorite is the dance duet with Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor, Moses Supposes, but this movie has more great stuff including, Singing in the Rain, and Make ‘em Laugh and Broadway Melody Part 1 and Part 2 and Good Morning, Good Morning

Fantasticks from the 1960’s.

I really loved “My Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss” @Kardamom
@Brian1946 Oh yeah, “Tommy.” Too cool.
@filmfann I recently heard a Hawaiian version of “Over the Rainbow” by Izzy. It was great.
@longgone I don’t seem to recall “Spamalot.”
@dxs Disney movies reminds me of an old fave, “Supercalifragalisticexpialodocious!”

My favorite musicals are “Annie”,“Tommy”,“Matilda”, “A Chorus Line”, “The Book of Mormon”, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”, “Evita” and “Pippin”
Favorite songs really depends on who is singing them and how they were staged.

One of my favorites is We’ve Got Magic to Do from Pippin

The Phantom of the Opera. I particularly love the opening when the chandelier goes up and when Christine sings Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.

I really like Gee, Officer Krupke from West Side Story.

Kids from Bye Bye Birdie is pretty cool too.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yetanotheruser Jerry Orbach “Try to remember . . .”

cookieman's avatar

@Blondesjon: Christ, I totally forgot West Side Story. Love that too.
saw a great production couple years ago

ibstubro's avatar

See my first link above, @cookieman & @Blondesjon. I considered Krupke, but went a little darker. I think I’ve seen all the numbers without ever actually seeing the entire movie.

Strauss's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Yes, Try To Remember. Many remember Jerry Orbach for his acting, but not so much for his wonderful voice. This song always reminds me of September Song, written by Kurt Weil. Many artists have recorded it, ranging from Walter Huston (in Knickerbocker Holiday, for which it was written originally) to Ella Fitzgeralk, to Frank Sinatra, to Willie Nelson. One of my favorite versions is from Lou Reed. Other Weill favorites of mine are Alabama Song (sung here by Weill’s wife, Lotte Lenya). then there is the iconic Mack the Knife by Louis Armstrong, originally written by Weill for The Three Penny Opera as Die Moritat Von Mackie Messer

ibstubro's avatar

It was before my time, @Yetanotheruser, but I love Mack the Knife. Probably better than some people from ‘the time’ because it seems so fresh to me. I heard it on the radio last week or so…what a treat.
