For my money, it’s still the Ken Burns photo documentary “The Civil War”.

Whether a TV documentary is “the best” is strictly in the eye of its beholder, but for film lovers like me, certainly one of the best is TCM’s 15-part series, The Story of Film.

@GloPro Cool. Sloths are funky. But I still have to vote for Ken Burn’s Civil War documentary.

I just saw “Escape from a Nazi Death Camp – Sobibor.” and was floored.

Trainloads of people, 2000 to 3000 per day, incinerated. How? Psychological manipulation and weapons. (And lack of weapons for the victims)
They are rounded up from their homes and told to bring their valuables and important possessions so they may be resettled safely.
They get on the trains and are whisked away.
When the train arrives at Sobibor they are greeted by young boys who take their bags and help them off the train.
They are given postcards and told to write home and say they arrived safely.
Then the commandant apologizes for the inconvenience and tells them there have been problems with lice so they all must take a shower.
They are herded into the room and locked inside. Then the gas is turned on. A port hole on the roof lets officers watch the carnage below.
The valuables are sorted and some are divided up.
The bodies are sent to the ovens where hidden gold and gold from teeth fillings is collected and divided up.
So many lives… so much wealth… stolen.
The details of the escape plan are riveting.

I saw it on WXXI – Escape from A Nazi Death Camp.

I like real-life stories with happy endings.

I don’t know if it counts as a TV documentary, but there’s one on Ernest Shackleton’s adventures in the Antarctic in 1914–1916, and the almost miraculous survival of his entire team (give or take a few dogs). A really incredible story.

The IMDB link is for the docudrama starring Liam Neeson, which I saw after seeing the original documentary (on IMAX, no less!)

Here is a link to the documentary: Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure.

I haven’t watched TV in almost 12 years, but I rent Netflix documentaries a lot.
I too liked the Ken Burns Civil war doc, years ago, when I still watched TV, but, the more recent ones, TV or not were the Timothy Treadwell “Grizzly Man” doc. Ancient Aliens series, Grey Gardens, & “Cloud, wild stallion of the Rockies.” I’m a nature nut, anything about wildlife and animals.
