What products do you buy the name brand of?

Asked by GloPro (8409points) June 18th, 2014 from iPhone

What items do you prefer the name brand vs. the generic?

I buy name brand tennis shoes. I buy the generic version of Herbal Essence shampoo.

I always opt for the generic form of prescription drugs.

I buy name brand cereal, but I’m not sure that I should be. I buy high quality coffee over the store brand, too. Canned veggies I choose the store brand.

I buy winter outdoor gear and my Search and Rescue gear based on the label, too. Certain brands hold up better and have better design. However, most camping accessories I buy whatever is cheapest. Not tents or sleeping bags… Those are name brand purchases. I’m talking about the water bottles, cookware, first aid supplies, knives, and the like. The accessories.

When do you opt for the name brand?

I’m a sucker for brand-name computers and other electronics. I know it’s silly to pay more for heavily advertised stuff but I usually do it anyway. I do, however, increasingly buy generic stuff the supermarket.

Name brand cereals and Oatmeal, the cheap stuff is crap.
I buy off brand shampoos but good conditioners, name brand pet foods, never the cheap stuff, Taste of the Wild and Chicken Soup for the cats soul. haha
I buy name brand makeup L’Oreal, but cheap lipsticks, whatever colors strike my fancy.
Name brand body lotions like Lubriderm or Aveeno, cheap lotions are inferior and horrible.

I am not a clothing/designer name brand type, I buy whatever I like regardless of label.
I can’t believe the money women will pay for certain items like Coach Purses, which I think are incredibly ugly and cost hundreds of dollars, no thanks.

There are very few things I’m brand-specific about.

Lysol Power toilet bowl cleaner: That stuff will wipe out the WORST rust stains.
OB Tampons.
My go-to brand for coffee is Eight O’Clock Coffee. I’m not married to it, but it is consistently good, and so far other whole-bean varieties in the grocery store can’t compare. Starbucks’ is burnt and the bulk options are stale.

I don’t think there’s anything else I’m brand-specific about that isn’t a one-off product, like Sriracha hot sauce.

I pay no attention to that stuff. I buy what I need when I need it
and look for the cheapest price at the highest quality.

@Dan_Lyons So is price more important than quality for you?

Like me choosing name brand tennis shoes. They are manufactured according to rigorous testing. Attention is given to arch support, ankle support, cushion, etc. Sure you can find Kirkland brand tennis shoes for $30 or so, but they fall apart faster and may not support your feet as well in rigorous activity. Do you spring for the cheapest high-quality shoe, which would be a name brand? Or do you still buy the Kirkland shoe? I personally hate buying tennis shoes because I think they cost too much, but I do when I need to because poor foot support leads to bad knees, posture, back support, etc. for me it’s important to know I have a good athletic shoe. Heels or sandals I’ll buy anything.

No @GloPro, like I said, I look for the cheapest price at the highest quality .

Because all our shoes are now made in the Orient where the little people cannot believe Americans really have such big feet, I must buy New Balance Extra Wide (they claim it is 4EEEE but I am sure it is only EEE3).
I pay anywhere from $60 to $105 for NB 609 (Best arch support in tennis shoe too).

I bought the cheaper toilet paper this time and am completely dissatisfied and will be returning to Charmin Ultra Soft soon.

I used to get Dawn dish soap (because it cleans grease best when I am done working on the car) but now I get the cheaper substitute which is just as good.

I have no idea about name brands in clothes anymore and am probably 10 to 20 years behind the times.

I usually buy knock offs, except when it comes to canned fruits and veggies. There seems to be a noticeable difference between name brand fruits and veggies and the knock off version.

Beer
I only trust Guinness, Duvell, and some craft beers
PBR and all the AB brands are grody

fluthernutter's avatar

Both?

I’ll use generic toilet paper for myself. But name brand for my kids. (I use toilet paper and water instead of baby wipes. Generics fall apart before I can get the job done.)

I’ll buy the generic sparkling water for every day use. But will save a bottle of Perrier for when I’m pregnant and feeling nauseous. (There’s a difference! But it’s only critical when I’m about to hurl.)

I’ll buy the generic dish washing liquid for the dishes. But will also buy Dawn to make homemade bubble solution. (The bubbles seem to last longer with the name brand.)

There usually is a difference between the products. You just got to weigh what you need it for.

Mayonnaise – it’s all about the Hellman’s.

As mentioned in the OP I stick with brand names when failure is unthinkable. Ropes, climbing gear, knives, tools (power and hand tools) and firearms. Other stuff can be lowest bidder of best quality. I no longer climb nor do high rescue, but I want anyone using something I provide to come back alive. Has anyone here had experience with knock off dyneema as opposed to Amsteel or similar name-brand ropes?
Oh yeah! TP MUST be name brand for fear of digital penetration.

Only Del Monte Blue Lake whole green beans. Rip off price.
Brand name clothes off Ebay like Chico’s. New Balance sneakers off Ebay.
Lysol gel toilet bowl cleaner.
Name brand cereals.

majorrich's avatar

Condoms and Cars. Absolutely name brand TP (must be at least two ply)

fluthernutter's avatar

@majorrich Haha…how hard do you wipe your ass?

You can add another vote for name brand condoms.

Coke, internet service provider.

GloPro's avatar

@fluthernutter haha, he did mention it twice, huh? There must be a story we haven’t heard behind that one.
@majorrich You can buy generic 2-ply. I did just yesterday. It was $3 cheaper and nice and fluffy.

Mama was not pleased last time I tried that. I suffered mightily.

My dad had a girlfriend (that didn’t last, thank goodness) that was gifted a tin of Ghirardelli hot chocolate for Christmas. Once it was gone she continued to refill the tin with cheap generic hot cocoa mix and would always offer hot cocoa to everyone. She brought the tin out on a tray and would always rave about how buying the premium hot chocolate made such a difference. What a wacko.

Seek's avatar

@GloPro That is hilarious. And not a bad idea.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Wow! Those kinds of things, although relatively minor, say a lot about people. It’s dishonest.
