Anyone been to the Catskills lately?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) June 25th, 2014

I’ve heard most places are pretty run down. If you have been lately and liked where you stayed please let me know your experience and recommendations.

The only place I would stay in the Catskills now would be Mohonk Mountain House.

I’d been in Brown’s some years ago and it was quite run down.

I don’t know where you guys are going, but I was down to the Taste of the Catskills last Fall in Delhi and it was beautiful. The village of Hobart has a thriving bookstore community, Stamford is doing well, Margaretville is bouncing back well from Irene. That’s all in the upper Catskills, I haven’t been down into the lower Catskills in a bit. Oh and Hunter Mountain had a country music fest a week or two ago, 40,000 people attended. I think you just have to know the territory.

Here’s something else that was in the paper today. You can tour some of the farms in the region on July 4th. Go to www.catskillsfamilycreameries.com.

I like the Catskills a lot. For me it’s usually been a day trip, as it’s within 2 hours away. I would check reviews on Trip Advisor if I were going to plan to stay anywhere, if I were you.

I live at the base of the Catskill Mountains. It is beautiful up here. We have lakes and wild life preservation trails, quaint towns for shopping, beautiful Grand Hotels tucked away on privately owned secluded property, live seasonal shows. It’s not so great to live here if your not from here because the people can be a bit umm… how should I say this… uh, racist. Yea they can be a bit biased when it comes to living with outsiders, and there are no real jobs out here that pay decent, but if your just visiting for the attractions, then it’s a cool place.

Funny this popped up again. I was just in that area of NY again last week.
