What would be on your pu-pu platter?

Asked by Kardamom (33484points) July 1st, 2014

A pu-pu platter is a Hawaiian appetizers platter. Kind of like dim sum or tapas. What would you like to have on your own, personal, pu-pu platter?

I’d like to have some sort of fried tofu, with a wonderful sweet and sour dipping sauce. And some stuffed squash blossoms, and some marinated mushrooms. What would you guys like to have on your own, personal, pu-pu platter?

Crab Ragout! or that thing that’s in a pastry with wonderful warm white cheesy stuff. Fried shrimp but the japanese way. That dipping sauce. Those wonderful ribs, served in a little boat over a candle heater. OMG your’e taking me back to Trader Vic’s days.

If you want us to stick with the Pacific Asian theme I’ll say lettuce wraps with chicken breast, and julienne carrots and cucumbers with Cheesecake Factory peanut sauce. Egg rolls with duck sauce. Chinese BBQ ribs. Cold cucumber salad.

If it can be any part of the world I go with eggplant rollatini (very light on the ricotta, I like it heavier on the mozzerella for the stuffing mixture). Olives. Marinated and grilled zuchinni, mushrooms, and yellow and orange peppers. Orzo or farfalle pasta salad with a oil and vinegar based dressing (very light on the dressing) with peas tossed in. Hmmm, I guess I am in the mood for mediteranean food.

Tempura chicken and shrimp with some pineapple chunks.

Spring rolls
beef teriyaki strips
crab rangoons
chicken fingers (if there are any kids at the table; it’s what they’ll eat, and all that they’ll eat)
chicken wings
some of those impossibly, unnaturally red sweet-and-sour pork short ribs
a little flaming sterno “volcano” in the middle of the platter

I’m sure there are things that I’m missing, but I’m not recalling them right now; it’s been a long time.

OMG this thread is making me hungry. And it’s only 7 a.m. here.

I am an egg roll fan, and I’d like it with soy sauce. I’m going to back out of this conversation now, because I don’t want to make myself hungry.

Defiantly shrimp tempura and spring rolls. Perhaps some peeled and deveined marinated shrimp. Sticky rice, I think and some steamed veggies with a variety of dipping sauces.

@ibstubro I see nothing __defiant__ about that pu pu platter. But I’m sure you’re creative enough you could figure it out! :)

ibstubro's avatar

Yeah, too late, @snowberry! And the danged spell check caught it, but I let it get the wrong fix before posting. Such is my life. :)

snowberry's avatar

@ibstubro S’all right. It gave me a chance to “rib” you a little. Want some sauce on that?

ibstubro's avatar

I’ve never heard of fish ribs! Do you suppose they eat racks of ribs off the bigger fish?

snowberry's avatar

Wait, do you have to have only fish on a pu pu platter? Don’t the Hawaiians eat a lot of pork too?

Lovely Spam! wonderful Spam!!

My personal preference is no meat, @snowberry, but I believe Hawaiians are very fond of pork and chicken. Oriental influenced cuisine. The Thia food I had in Hawaii bore no resemblance to that I’ve seen/had since. Hawaiian Thai was amazing stuff! They set the bar too high. Same with the Vietnamese I had a little mom and pop restaurant in Hawaii. What I’ve had in the Midwest is crap, even the so-called “celebrated, authentic” place in high-end St. Louis.
