Are there any good comedians?
I have seen Louis CK described as the best comedian. I sure hope not, because I have yet to laugh at anything I have heard him say. I like that he makes a point of not using offensive language, but I find his routines to be lame.
Who else is there? I don’t think of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as standup comedians. Their stuff is okay, but it is mostly reactive. There are no stories. I don’t care for Bill Maher. I find him to be intellectually deficient. I am also not a fan of Amy Schumer or Sarah Silverman.
I am not all that demanding. It was not that long ago that there were plenty of decent comedians. Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen Degeneris and Drew Carey when they did standup. Before them there was a whole range of comics, including Steve Martin, George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Tracy Ullman, Dick Gregory, Steve Wright and Henny Youngman.
Is the standup comic a victim of postmodernism?

I really liked John Pinnett but he’s dead now.
John Pinette was pretty good. I enjoy Gabriel Iglesias nowadays
No, comics change with the times. It’s we who are getting old. And there are still some VERY funny contemporary comics out there. Louis Black cracks me up.
I think that Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engval, of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, are both clean and hilarious. Not exactly standup comedy, but funny nonetheless, are the actors on The Big Bang Theory. My Dad and I regularly watch re-runs of the show and laugh at least as hard, or harder than we did upon our first viewing.

Are you sure you are talking about Louis CK? He is by far my favorite comedian, but I have yet to hear him described this way. Are you sure you’re not talking about about Jim Gaffigan? He’s a well-known clean comedian.
There’s a comedian that goes by the name Fluffy…I believe his last name is Iglesias. I think he’s funny.
I’ll come back with an answer when I’m done thinking about hot pockets. Hominid should understand.
Bill Hicks (dead) and David Cross come to mind.
But really, it just sounds like you are getting old. I’m old too. I don’t consider Jay-Z music.
This is a good list of current top comedians.
I’d recommend Anthony Jeselnik, Doug Benson, Jim Jefferies and Jim Norton.
Lots of the Whose Line Is It Anyway shows were generally clean. But those individual comedians are not.
Jim Jefferies had a show on FX called Legit. It was so incredibly funny and so very sad at the same time. The series finale was so heartbreaking.
@johnpowell I’ve been meaning to get around to that show.
@El_Cadejo :: It was great but really sad. After the finale I had to get drunk.
Thanks all. A number of names to check out who I had not previously heard of.
I do not require that a comedian be clean, but if you use off color humor, it better be really good.
@Kardamom , I agree that The Big Bang Theory is really funny, but that is comic acting and not standup.
Some of you mentioned age as a factor. I had not thought about that. Do you mean that comedians appeal to a younger demographic, or that sense of humor atrophies with age? I sure hope it is not the latter and I don’t see why humor must be age specific.
I second Jim Gaffigan for a clean and funny comic.
Also, try Dimetri Martin. He’s my current favorite.
I have seen Dimetri Martin routines. In general, I like his nerdy jokes, but his performances always leave me wanting more. He does not reveal very much about who he is. I wish that he would include more personal material.
Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Doug Stanhope, Katt Williams, and Joe Rogan (yup, the host of Fear Factor) are some of my favorite comedians.
I think Louis CK is hysterical and he comes out with new material annually.
Frankie Boyle
Sarah Millican
Lee Evans
Roy “Chubby” Brown
Yah @SquirrelEStuff Doug Stanhope is the shit. Tim Minchin is a wit. And he’s dead but Mitch Hedberg is a delight.
Louis CK annoys me sometimes. I have to be in the mood for him. I have to admit he keeps material fresh. A donation is encouraged but really he does have a few admirable traits.
@Unbroken: I just discovered Mitch Hedberg (through Pandora) a couple years ago. I didn’t know he had died until you mentioned.
I’m so behind the eightball.
@Unbroken , I forgot about Tim Minchin. I caught a few of his routines on YouTube. The one called Storm is my favorite.
It is a shame @cookieman, he was brillaint in his own right. Sorry to break the bad news but at least his work lives on.
@LostinParadise I have yet to see storm I had heard about it but it slipped through the cracks. Thanks for reminding me I will make sure to priortize it.
