Why so many Accidents on Russian Dash Cams?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) July 13th, 2014

I was perusing YouTube this afternoon and found post after post of Russian Dash Cam fails. All kinds and sorts of terrible errors in distance and speed estimation. Winter Driving errors, use of incorrect lanes and, in my opinion, what appears to be rampant OMVI. I did do a check on American Dash Cam fails, and the number is a factor of huge smaller. Is driver training less stringent in Russia, or do they really get Annihilated before getting behind the wheel?

It is my understanding that scam accidents are common, and it is prudent to have a dash cam in Russia. So it is likely that the dash cam is more common there. And nobody is interested in seeing boring extended cuts of Russians driving around accident-free, hence the abundance of crazy Russian youtube clips.

They all have dash cameras for fraud avoidance, the pedestrians “jump” on the hoods and sue. That’s the Russian way.

Traffic laws are much looser there.

@hominid :: Is right. This was covered pretty heavily when the meteor hit and there was a ton of dash-cam footage.

Alcoholism is so rampant in the Russia, that it is the leading factor in the plummeting lifespan of the country’s citizens. Research was undertaken by a combine of Russian academic institutions on the prevalence of drunk driving in the country, and the results were so startling that the government smothered them by classifying them state secrets.

I love the Russian dash cam videos!

Like others have said, the accidents precede the dash cams. Corruption is pretty much a Russian pastime. Wide swaths of the country are still lacking in local control because so much of the authority there is national. So having the cameras is just basic self-defense.
