Would it be possible to build a phone answering machine that answers differently depending on who is calling?

You can get caller id for a phone, so the phone must be able to recognize who the caller is. Once you have that, you should be able to give different salutations for different types of callers.

My Nokia answering machine feature does just that. Different ring tones.

Sure, I don’t see why not with phone number recognition.

You can even identify which id’s to not answer at all, or hang up on.

@majorrich , Do answering machines have these features already?

I had a computer programmed to do it back in the 1980’s. I have to assume there are some somewhere. An old laptop with a modem and win95 can do it
