Origins of the Question
This comes from the 1960 movie, Time Machine.
* Spoiler *
At the end, the time traveler escapes back to his house in his own time, then quickly leaves again, presumably to go back to the future and help rebuild society. The only difference upon departing is that there are 3 books missing from his home library.
I always thought it created a cool question.
