Do poor drivers expect everyone else to watch out for them?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23411points) July 31st, 2014

The drivers I have seen doing things that would make you scream, unsafe passing, cutting people off, passing on the right, texting, red light running and so on.
If the other drivers, these idiots came in contact with were not paying attention and went into a very defensive mode there would have been a really bad accident.
So in your opinion do you think these poor drivers expect everyone to watch out for them, or are they just totally clueless about driving in general?

Just yesterday I saw this big motorhome pulling out of a side road right in front of a transport truck, and to top it off just stops dead in the lane bringing the transport to a full stop, then proceeds to go after about 15 seconds, I mean if that trucker wasn’t paying 100% attention there would have been a very bad accident.

They probably don’t think that much into it. Totally clueless! Accidents always happen to someone else. ALL drivers should be required to take and pass a Defensive Driving course!

I don’t think they care. They only do what they want to do and probably feel inconvenienced by other people, they don’t care what other people think.

My opinion is some of them don’t even know when they are driving badly. That’s part of the reason they are bad drivers. I think this accounts for the majority of bad drivers. I was convinced of this when Oprah did her no textin while driving campaign and so many people said, “I didn’t even realize it was dangerous.” You have to be an idiot (I usually hate calling names, but seriously I cannot think of any nice or understanding words to describe someone who doesn’t know that when you take your eyes off the road you endanger yourself and others). Add in my sister recently verifying with me a right of way question (she has not driven in many years) because a girlfriend who was driving her somewhere was angry on the road at another driver for not yielding to her, and indeed my sister was right that in fact the other driver had the right of way. My sister will not drive with her anymore, because this is only one of many instances on the road with this woman.

Some of the bad drivers are angry drivers and rather narcisstistic and do expect everyone to move out of the way. They are the sun, and the planets should be revolving around them in every aspect of their life.

Some really aren’t thinking about it, as someone mentioned above, they tend to not be good at predicting consequences in general in their life.

Where I live we have bad drivers partly because there are many tourists who don’t know where they are going and do crazy moves on the road when they realize their turn or exit is coming up. Some come from places that don’t have highways so they are not used to high speeds, or they might live in a city and rarely drive.

Every one of us has been a bad driver at one time or another. A mistake on the road, exhaustian, rushing somewhere, things happen, we aren’t perfect, but some people really need to go to, or back to, driving school.

Poor drivers don’t think about other drivers. Period.

It’s people driving high-profile vehicles that scare me the most.

Put me in the ‘Oblivious’ camp.

Think shoppers, because you get to observe them face-to-face. Poor drivers are the same people that park their cart on one side of the grocery aisle while shopping the other. The lady that, when you step back to let her through, stops right in front of you. They race up ahead, then crawl down the middle of the aisle looking for something. The guy that races you to the checkout, when you’re carrying 3 things and he has a cart piled 3 foot past the top.

Most of the people are just so self-absorbed that they don’t realize that there ARE other people.

I think it’s highly unlikely that poor drivers see themselves as poor drivers.
