How much would you pay for an online blockbuster?
As media is gravitating towards digital offerings and streaming, I am wondering what you all would pay for a blockbuster movie if it were released online the same day as movie theaters? Would not having to wait months until after theatrical release justify a price hike? If there were a Netflix like service for unlimited theatrical releases online, how much could you justify paying?
-This is kind of a spinoff of another question I asked concerning television/theater premieres versus digital streaming and media offerings.

Any movie worth paying for, I want to see in a theater first! Right now I’m planning an excursion this evening to see “Get on Up” before the buzz gets out and the crowds appear.
@stanleybmanly I definitely understand that feeling. I go to the theater to see the movies I am really excited about! Get on Up was great!
Movies are still produced with the theater going public in mind, designed for the big screen, with the expensive production values more suited to large-scale viewing.
So no, I would not pay anything for release day streaming. A big part of it for me is also the social aspect, meeting up with friends, having a meal, going to a movie.
$6–10 per movie. As much as I’d love to go to the movies, finding (and paying for a sitter) and planning the evening around breastfeeding is more than I care to deal with after working full-time.
@canidmajor I enjoy the full movie going experience as well. I looking for some opinions of those who don’t like going to movie theaters and wondering if this would be an enticing alternative and how much they would pay. Also, sometimes a schedule doesn’t allow for going to the movies so I am wondering how much would people pay in the circumstances where they don’t have time to go to the movies.
Would you pay for online streaming if you didn’t have time or if it were a movie that you weren’t excited enough to see in theaters?
@Cupcake Thank you for your input! It sounds like its more trouble than its worth to go to the theater. I think some sort of online offering would be good for people who don’t want to leave the house or can’t leave the house depending on the circumstance. However, I’m sure the pricing would be ridiculous based on the movie studios.
@RedKnight , you’re right, of course, and I wasn’t even thinking about the motivation behind the question. Sorry. You have some excellent points about inability to attend a regular theater.
With that in mind, Good Question. :-)
And what @Cupcake said.
@canidmajor Thank you :) You’re right and I find your input very important because it tells me that there are still a lot out there that prefer the movie premiere over digital distribution. I prefer seeing a premiere or watching the movie in theaters as well.
Probably around 5–10$. Generally I wait until I can pirate it, but for exceptional movies that I really want to see and can’t wait for, I’d make an exception. Current examples would be Guardians of the Galaxy and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
I will not go to a movie theater. It is often too loud and more often than not there are 3–5 people that won’t stfu which ruins the whole experience.
@Mimishu1995 what if it was a movie you really wanted to watch and didn’t want to wait for the DVDrip to be released? Or are you just more patient than I?
