Bogus dining, would one still have to pay, or can they get away (details inside)?

Let’s say you have a party of 6–8 teens and they go to a restaurant. They order steak, lobster (if available), other expensive plates, extra sides, and such, with desert. After the salad, or soup (don’t eat them so I don’t know which is served 1st) with sufficient time to assure their meal is being cooked, they ask for the check to pay for the soup or salad and the drinks and that is all. They ordered the meal but have not received it, but if it has been started for them, can they get away without paying for it, even if it was an expensive plate? Do they have to pay because they started with the appetizer, soup, or salad? If they don’t have to pay, does the restaurant or diner have to eat the cost of the meal because you can’t just put it back on the shelf, or know someone else could order it as if it were a hamburger all being made the same?

Probably it is up to the restaurant to decide whether to push for the full payment. I imagine most would simply take the starter payments and call it even. It’s not worth a scene, especially if the place is posh.

The joke is really on the teens though; they risk getting in trouble for… a salad? Why not at least eat the steak and lobster?

Why would they even do that?

@dappled_leaves Why not at least eat the steak and lobster?
If they actually had the meal they ordered delivered, and they sat and ate it, would it not make them more culpable if they did not pay for it? If they never received it, they can claim they did not benefit by it or de facto steal it (_because it is in their bellies unpaid for—).

@Dutchess_III Why would they even do that?
The reason why they will do donuts in suburban intersections, put graffiti on walls, or flash rob the corner quikie mart (swoop in in droves and snatch food and dash away), because they know they can do it mainly because they are minors, because they are bored, and they believe they are smarter then The Man, and have some control over him and society, all of the above or none of it; less they are bored.

Is this based on any reality or merely hypo-thetical?

Has roots in reality…....

They are still responsible for the cost of the entire meal. They ensured enough time that the meals would already be cooked.
These kids are testing the limits, and need to pay.
