Has the weather where you live been cooler than the typical summer, this year?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 14th, 2014

Where I live, NY Metro area, it’s been not too hot this summer. Right now it’s in the 70’s, which is not typical summer weather. Nights have been nice and I haven’t put the window AC units in at all.

How has the summer been where you live?

I am hearing that it’s going to be another bad winter, too. I hope it’s not a trend.

It was boiling hot in southern California all summer. We had disgusting, humid weather. The weather was consistently in the mid to high 90s and broke 100 a few times. Totally gross. I’ve moved up north and while we have had a couple of hot days since I’ve been here, the weather has generally been less humid and with more wind.

Well here in the interior of B.C canada we are having a really hot dry summer we have had weeks of heat of over 100f and because of that we have had tons of forest fires as well.

No real summer (Germany). However, I tend to not trust my judgement on that… my evaluation of the weather strongly depends on my (summer) plans and overall mood.

It has been the coolest summer in more than five years here—fewer days above 90 degrees.

I don’t think so. I’m in Clearwater, FL and it has been pretty typical. Mostly high 80’s sometimes reaching the low 90’s during the day, right around 80 at night.

Hell no. It’s been Summer since January. My bulbs wouldn’t bloom because it was too hot.

@muppetish
IDK about that.. I live in southern California and I think it’s been pretty mild. If you’re talking about the 1 week, really 2 days, a bit ago that were humid, yea.. It really was.. But that was a week tops. Overall it’s been in the 70–80’s. I don’t think it’s broken 100 once in San Diego. I haven’t had AC for about 10 years and I think it’s much cooler this year. Don’t get me wrong I still turn a fan on at night, but I’m not uncomfortable.

The coldest winter in decades. Last summer was the hottest in decades.

@Esedess I lived in LA county, which is quite a drive from San Diego. The weather was disgusting. Inland temperatures were really bad all summer. It’s generally that hot all year, though. It’s one of the major reasons I wanted to move.

Coldest summer I can remember here in East Tennessee

Here in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, the summer weather has been unseasonably cooler. Normally, it’s incredibly hot and humid. For the first time in 20 years, I didn’t turn the A/C on until the first week in August.

For the most part, it was crappy like last summer. About three weeks ago summer finally showed up a little, it is still not as hot as it is supposed to be, but better than the paltry 71–79 deg like last summer.

I hope you won’t mind if I turn your question around 90 degrees… Where I live on the globe has been going through winter and it has been markedly warmer than usual.

I’m in Michigan and its been significantly cooler than average. That’s fine by me. No complaints here.

^^ Be very grateful.

I’ve been living in Tacoma Washington for 21 years and this Summer is by far the warmest. The trees are suffering in the heat and low rainfall. Also last Winter was also the warmest with just a very tiny bit of snow in Tacoma.

I usually prefer cooler temps, but after the winter we just had (it was one for the record books) I was looking forward to some summer heat. We haven’t seen it. We’ve had two days that reached 90 degrees and those were back in May. Most of our summer days have been in the 70s, and our evenings have been in the 50s. This is not typical for western Illinois. Swimming season has not been fun.

We finally have some heat and humidity in our forecast starting next week. The children get to enjoy it in the classroom.

Much hotter and much too dry. I’m half way up the coast at about 63 degrees North in Norway. We are finally getting some rain this week. There has been a fire ban in the woods since mid winter. We didn’t even have enough snow this past winter.

On the whole it’s been warmer but this week it’s bloody freezing. I had to put my bedroom heating on a couple of nights ago.

I’m in the NY Metro area, and this summer has been typical to what I remember summers being like in the 1970s and ‘80s. Going over 90° was rare then, and we were always amazed when it happened. But since the 1990s going over 90° became more frequent and heat waves in triple digits have been happening more commonly since the turn of the century.

I’ve been enjoying this ‘typical’ summer and wish it would last, but with the environmental changes that have occurred and the continuing trend, I know that the hotter summers will become more common. I found a table of average temperatures for NYC: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/monthly/USNY0996

Milder than usual, In August most of the time we are in the triple digits but have not done so yet this year. I read the last time that happened was in 2004.

Looking at a NOAA chart, it looks like we are smack in the middle of what they call the normal range so I guess it has been so long that abnormal has become the new normal for me.

It’s been really cool. I’ve got peas blossoming again. That’s never happened in August. Usually they are totally done in July.

Quite the opposite. We had an extremely hot winter, in the 90’s here in Southern California, where it’s usually in the low 50’s. It hasn’t let up. This summer has been sweltering and awful. We had wildfires a couple of months ago, and now we have super high humidity, coupled with high temps. We’re also in the midst of a drought that’s been going on for at least 2 years. The heat has been with us for as long. I’ve slept with a fan going for about 2 years, and have recently, over the last 4 months or so, resorted to wearing a wet rag around my neck, as we don’t have air conditioning. We never really needed it until about 2 years ago, but my neighbor who has the same exact floor plan, and does have air conditioning said her bill was over $600 last month. Ours was $65. We can’t afford AC.

I live in the south of England and I would say we have had a hotter than usual summer. It’s only just starting to cool down but May, June and July were lovely and warm.

Sierra foothills in Northern CA. here, about 40–50 miles from Lake Tahoe and it has been hot and humid on and off too as well as being in a severe drought with temps. averaging low to mid 90’s and about 10 days of well over 100 that ended about 2 weeks ago. Not to mention a crap ton of nasty wildfires.
Today is hovering around 93 but there is a breeze. One more week of high 80’s to low 90’s and by next Sat. they are predicting 82–84 for a few days.

I am SO SICK of this heat.
30 minutes of outside work and you need a full shower again. Gah!
