Is there a difference between a sexual assault and rape?

Rape is a type of sexual assault, but there can be sexual assaults that aren’t rape. Groping, for instance, can constitute sexual assault when it is done without consent.
Both have lasting emotional consequences for the person assaulted or raped.
IMO rape is as bad as murder.
@SavoirFaire is correct. Sexual assault is any kind of unwanted sexual contact. Rape is unwanted sex.
