I saw it last week, and was slightly disappointed. I absolutely loved the first half, and I appreciate Richard Linklater’s passion for the movie, but I wasn’t as engaged with the story and characters in the second half.
It felt underwhelming, and Mason’s conversations with his girlfriend about his thoughts and ideas grew very tiresome. What did you think of the film?

I, too, was disappointed with “Boyhood.” Lots of good stuff in it for sure, but for me it just dragged, and wound up pretty much nowhere. Plus I wasn’t thrilled with watching the actors grow older and older and older. Ethan Hawke, for example, one of my favorite actors, once seemed perennially young to me. This movie proves he’s not.
I was disappointed in it too. A bright idea and some interesting scenes but the length and dialogue in the last half, as you say, were tedious. I wasn’t particularly left with any big “ahas!” or meat to chew on the next day. I thought that Ethan Hawke’s performance was the strongest and the development of his character appealing.
I saw it. I thought it was slow. I was dreading that something traumatic was going to happen but it didn’t. I liked how Ethan Hawke’s character was actually not a bad dad at all. He was reliable and gave good advice, and did fun stuff with the kids. It turned me into an Ethan Hawke fan. I, too thought the teen version of the boy was tedious. The girl (sister) was the daughter of the director. I thought of all the young actresses in Hollywood, this is the best one for the job? (I say that sarcastically).
@jca, you’re absolutely right about the sense of dread that hung over the second half of the film. I was certain someone was going to die, and when nothing bad happened, I felt partly relieved but mostly cheated.
All of Linklater’s film are slices of life and talky but this was too big a slice. I found the scenes with Hawke in them the most lively but the first abusive step-Dad part was also gripping. The second half meandered too slowly. In the “Berore Sunset” series they were meandering through Paris at least.
It was one of the longest 5 hours of my life ~
