While in school, were you and your classmates ever given an aptitude test, and what became of the results?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) August 24th, 2014

When I was in Jr. High, about 1972 or so, my entire 8th grade was given an aptitude test. We assembled in the gym for it.
I assumed I’d score highest in literature or sociology. I was very surprised to find out that I’d scored the highest, at 98%, in engineering. I remember those engineering questions, too. The were such no-brainers, in my opinion, that they seemed absurd.
Well, I never heard another word about my results. I don’t know if anyone else did, either.

On FB, a friend said she had taken an aptitude test in the 90’s, and was told she didn’t have a chance in science, which is where she scored the highest.

What is the point of even taking the tests if no one follows through?

My teacher made me do it again, claiming I cheated.

Nothing good came from it . :-)

I remember the test It would have been in the early 60’s. It said I’d be good at “science” – whatever that meant.
No surprise. I do not know if the results went anywhere. No doubt they are recorded “on my permanent record” stored in the school vault – probably next to the rifle range.

I remember mine said I was mechanically inclined. Hahahaha.
I only know where to check the oil and put the gas in the car.

The aptitude test drove me insane until this day… I was told that I had 140 I.Q and I refused to do homework and I started skipping school and winging the test. I took another to get into the military and I got 98 percentile overall and 99 percentile vocabulary. Test like these drove me to have OCD and I turned arrogant and became a smart ass and a jerk. Because I thought I was better than others and the teachers were wrong not to give me straight A’s. I got straight D’s and C’s in high school.

I got to move up two grades :)

talljasperman's avatar

@trailsillustrated I should have asked that. instead they wanted to hold me back a year. I did challeng the science 30 diploma exam (grade 12) without even taking grade 11 science 20. Congratulations on being skipped ahead.

@talljasperman I got 65% for the science 30 diploma exam.

I didn’t score below 80% on anything. That surprised me.

@talljasperman I had terrible grades in high school too hence having to challenge

@trailsillustrated In Alberta any adult can redo any grade 12 exam for $26.75 3 times a year.

@Dutchess_III You can go directly into university without prerequisites in Athabasca University. You can take 10 classes then transfer to any university in Canada or maybe even world wide.

Well, I already have my bachelor’s degree so…..

talljasperman's avatar

@Dutchess_III What is your degree in?

talljasperman's avatar

@Dutchess_III Cool… Mine is philosophy and psychology as liberal arts pre-law… but I never finished I ran out of money and I sold my textbooks for food and failed out. I lost my confidence in my university (Augustana University) I knew I was failing so I sold everything and ordered lots of pizza and worked out in the gym and prepared for a job in a grocery store with my mom. I planned to save some money and to go to Athabasca university then take a masters in counselling. in Athabasca University.
