MacAfee is stuck at 0% downloading updates for two days now, how can I fix it?

My ISP (SHAW) gives me MacAfee for free so I don’t want to let go of it.

It may be free, but it’s crap.

It’s a pig on memory and disk space. There are many many many other alternatives to McAfee that are lighter weight, and actually work.
