Does anyone have some good home remedy cures for an itchy, possibly dry eye?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) September 5th, 2014

This has been going on before my visit from my fanged friend. My eye is really itchy and feels slight dry, although that could be from the itchy feeling. I have so much crap flowing through my system right now I don’t want to add any more if I can help it. I wondered if someone might have something they tried in a pinch that relieved that itchy feel?

When that happens to my eyes I just simply go to the sink and splash my eyes with the tapwater. I splash the water into my eyes several times for each eye while blinking rapidly. Works great for me.

Sounds like allergies to me. Try Opcon-A eye drops. If you don’t think it’s allergies, get some Visine or similar eye-drops.

I get itchy eyes every spring (in May) and early fall (first two weeks of September). This is not a “home remedy”, but this is what works for me every time, and it may work for you: try some eye drops containing tetrahydrozoline or naphazoline (anti-histamines) and zinc sulfate (an astringent). It is important to get drops with both ingredients.
I believe I’m not supposed to name any brands, but if you go to your drugstore and look in the OTC eye care section, you will find many with these ingredients. Good luck.
BTW I’m using the drops right now. Two drops in each eye in the morning and again at night at bedtime is typically all I need. Sometimes two more in mid-afternoon.

These are a couple of good suggestions. I have used a goldenseal wash on dogs and me, with some success.
If you Google “homemade herbal eyewash” you will find a number of sites that could help you.

If dryness is more of a problem than itchiness (itchiness is more probably due to allergies), try some eye drops containing povidone.

Itchy eye or eyes? If it is just one eye then I doubt it is allergies, but I agree itchy eyes usually means allergy, although allergy eyes often come with some redness and can actually be watery, but don’t have to be. It is ragweed season, which is awful for a lot of people.

If you think the dryness is the culprit, I like the Refresh brand eye drops. I use the daily regular ones and also the gel ones. The gel mostly at night, but also during the day if the dryness is very bad. The gel drops are great for very dry eyes in my opinion, there is an ointment in a tube also for when you sleep, because dryness is often the worst when you first wake.

My dry eyes are mostly caused from my thyroid problem. I only need drops when I need to change my thyroid medication dose.
