…and not because you needed to? I’m not talking about grocery shopping, or getting a new jacket because your old one doesn’t fit anymore, I’m talking about something possibly expensive, unplanned, and tons of fun.

I am on a tight budget these days but, when times were prosperous for me from about 2004 and ending in 2012, I traveled quite a bit, bought some very nice furnishings for my house and spared no expense on my pets, the best of everything for all of us, within reason. I do miss being able to not worry about finances but am also adaptable and can make do well if I have to. I am a firm believer in treating ourselves whenever possible, after all whats the point of working your ass off if you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labor?
I was on morphine for a week recently. Then oral opiates as needed after that. I had this yen for Coca Cola like I haven’t had since I was a little kid, No. It was worse than that. I was obsessing over an ice cold can of Coke. It had to be in a can, not in a glass with ice. I never have a yen for soda. This was madness. There is no Coca Cola here because of the the economic embargo. There is no Pepsi either. There is only a domestic product called Jolly Cola, and it is much sweeter and less effervescent. Then my concierge’s nephew came up with a case of black market RC Cola. I jumped on it bigtime. I made a bunch of popcorn, popped some opiates, and had the time of my life watching old movies on the laptop. The case cost me about 85 bucks American. It was well worth it.I had one helluva headache the next day, but it was worth that, too.
Normally, I don;t buy anything I don’t need. There is no reason to.
I bought a really cool lamp that I didn’t need but wanted because I loved it on sight. It was kind of expensive but I had a coupon.
Also bought a globe of the world. It’s made out of a variety of minerals and rock.
I am shopping for a GPS. That is almost as much adventure as th geocaching I want it for, maybe.
A bento box shaped like a house. With a little gable roof!
I buy online a lot. Recently, I bought some children’s books illustrated by artists the Provensens. They were illustrating a lot of children’s books in the 60’s. I got a little compulsive about their books and bought about 5 of them from Amazon.
I also bought a pair of sneakers from Costco, about a week ago.
As far as buying expensive things just because I may want to, I try to curb my impulses. I try to buy things that are on sale or reasonably priced. I don’t usually go to department stores and buy expensive jewelry, for example. I talk myself out of stuff like that.
@jca Those are great!
I love vintage childrens illustration.
A few weeks ago I bought myself two books off of Amazon by Blexbolex.
A drinking bottle. It wasn’t expensive, but I have no money to spare at the moment. I bought it anyway, use it a lot, and love its design.
We are building a house and there have been some upgrades in the house that I guess I would consider wants not needs, but it isn’t the same to me as buying a new pair of shoes on a whim I don’t think? Big purchases I almost never do on a whim. The last one was a ring my husband bought me over 5 years ago. I went into the jewelry store wanting to show him a ring I thought he would like, and we walked out with a ring for me instead. This still amazes me, because it’s so unlike me to spend so much without any planning or deliberating. I don’t have much want for jewelry and expensive trinkets. I love that ring though. I usually suffer from buyer’s remorse, but I don’t at all with that ring.
I guess the last splurge was staying at a fairly expensive place for a couple days during our vacation this summer.
Years. I have never considered shopping to be a recreational activity. I purchased a 19th American appliqued quilt in 1985 that wiped out my piggy bank, but I have it hanging in my living room and love it…the fabric, the colors, the design, the tiny hand-stitches, the thought of the woman who created it brings me daily pleasure.
Last week I did buy a $35.00 hydrangea because it bloomed in late summer, could tolerate partial shade and had blossoms that were part white and part pink. I didn’t need it and it was an impulse. Plus, I had to pay my guy to plant it. It will be here for the next owners.
This morning. I bought a book to put on my Kindle.
@Dutchess_III Simply a bottle you buy to fill with your beverages. In my case, this :]
Last weekend, I bought myself another hat (I like to wear flat caps). I didn’t really need it, but I liked it and it will keep my head nice and cosy in the winter.
