Where are some nice places to visit in Ireland?
My family and I have always wanted to visit Ireland. We dream of retiring and buying a small cottage there to spend several months of the year in. What should we know about Ireland before visiting? What are the best months to vacation? We don’t mind cooler temperatures (50–70 degrees Fahrenheit is great). What towns are most quaint and picturesque?

You retty muchcan’t go wrong in the countryside in Ireland. For a first visit, I would suggest the Cliffs of Moher, then bein based in Killarney from where you can tour the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula and Muckross House. There are great “singing pubs” in Killarney with wonderful live music. These are all accessible from Shannon Airport. Further north, the Galway Peninsula and Connemara are wild and lovely. And near Dublin, Wicklow and Cork are worth visiting.
We once rented a cottage in Galway for a week then spent a few days at a B&B in Klllarney. There are numerous charming villages all over Ireland.
You can get cool and rainy weather at any time of year in Ireland but I would say that May through September are your best bets.
Regardless of when you go, I would give you the same advice as I gave my family when we went to England. No matter where we plan on going, there is a good chance of rain. Bring a good set of rain-gear, be prepared to put it on at a moments notice and then don’t let the weather dictate where or when you go places.
Personally, I would like to see some of the neolithic/megalithic stuff like Newgrange and Carrowmore and The Aran Islands Things like that, but that is a hobby of mine.
I would also like to go to the Desertmartin area in Northern Ireland because I believe that is where some of my maternal relatives are from and I would like the opportunity to see what I could find.
Good luck and enjoy your time there!.
I’ve been to Ireland 3 times. There are no places that are not nice to visit. There’s only better and best.
Try to visit King John’s Castle in Limerick. Try to visit Kilkenny (medieval city, fascinating). Donegal on the west coast (and the whole west coast) is incredible.
I understand Wicklow in the north east is beautiful. I haven’t been there.
There are tons of travel guides on the internet and books on the subject. Also, sign up with Irish tourism and you’ll get free maps and guides that way (government run tourism board).
I lived there for 5 years. quaint : Donegal, Doolin in Co. Claire, Kinsale in Co. Cork, and the Aran Islands.
Generally though most of the irish countryside is very beautiful. It even beats England. I was never disappointed by it…better you go experience it for yourself first..
