I get random bald spots about an inch long and round?

Asked by L1952 (206points) September 25th, 2014 from iPhone

For I don’t even know how long (years) I will get a random bald spot in a random place in my head, it’s only one at a time but I always have one. Does anyone have any idea what this could be and how I can stop it? I have never asked a doctor about it.

It could be alopecia areata. It can apparently be genetic but it can also be an auto immune problem. That article says the connection to stress has now been debunked, but you’re certainly under stress so perhaps you can keep a log and track what’s happening in your life when you get these bald patches.

I have been stressed out a very long time, I also started developing panic attacks at a very young age too. Thank you, I may ask a doctor, I may not, it’s not a great concern, my hair grows back, it’s just odd, thank you for the article!

Welcome. I’d mention it to your doctor. Can’t do any harm to ask what could be causing it. Especially if it’s an auto-immune reaction. That could be affecting other elements of your health too. Hopefully, your stress will be resolved before too long.

I would see a dermatologist.

Stress can definitely have this effect on some people. Yes, see your doctor asap and try to control your anxiety.

I had something like this for about a year quite a few years ago—although I had more than one spot at a time. In the center of each spot was a small inflammation. It did seem to be stress related, but it was treated with an antibiotic when it was first diagnosed and very alarming. Since then, very rarely I get one of these small spots. The condition itself caused much stress, so it was a bit of a circular problem. But the hair always grew back, and I learned how to relax my scalp.

Possible ringworm or other fungal activity. Try Selsun Blue shampoo. That worked well for me.
