Do I have to supply an address?
When filling out job aps sometimes they ask for the addresses of my references. I just don’t feel good about supplying personal addresses. Can I just note that it’s a personal address?

For a personal reference, I would think a phone number and maybe an email address are sufficient.
Specifically it’s asking “Professional References (Other than Relatives) Give references who have good knowledge of your work.”
I don’t know why they even ask for addresses.
I was thinking I could put “Personal address, Wichita, KS” or something.
Does it specifically ask for a home address? You could perhaps provide their work address instead. My wife says she would accept that (she is one of the people who reviews job applicants where she works).
No, it doesn’t specify home addresses. It just says “address.” Ask your wife why they ask for an address when they are provided with a phone number?
Her response:
“I have no idea. In fact, I ignore the address completely and wouldn’t care if it wasn’t provided. I’ve probably even hired people who didn’t include addresses for their references. But I don’t know because, again, I don’t pay attention to that part. I just need the phone number.”
Well, gonna play it by the book. If they ask for addresses, they gonna get addresses. This is the part of working that is the hardest for me….complying with BS!
If you’ve checked with the people you are listing as references what address you should use, why not just include that?
“Complying with BS” is basically part of what life is all about.
I know. And I’m bad at it @janbb. I’m working on it. I’m just supplying their business addresses. I’ve had to leave messages with 4 people. 2 of them have not yet responded.
I would probably just put the city and state where they live and a phone number and email address.
I’d be mad if my home address was supplied without me being asked beforehand . Just saying. I think an email addy and phone number would suffice?
I’m just going to go with their business addresses. I really don’t know why they even ask the question. Seems like some sort of HIPPA violation.
Hippa is about medical information only. Much more serious . Just give them email addys after all this is not 1990.
I wouldn’t like my email address given out either, though.
Lot less invasive. It’s called junk mail. Everyone gets tons of it.
I have a junk email account that I use to buy stuff from. It keeps the junk mail in my regular email down.
City and state should be sufficient. Who in their right mind would send a letter? They probably just want to know if you moved around a lot.
It wouldn’t have anything to do with me. It would be my references who may have moved a lot.
@Dutchess_III I assumed these were work references. They can’t possibly expect you to put down the home addresses of personal references – that would be a gross violation of their privacy.
That’s what I’m saying. But they didn’t specify. They just said, “Professional References (Other than Relatives) Give references who have good knowledge of your work.” Why they would assume, in this world, that people are static is beyond me. In the year and a half that I’ve been gone, the 3 references I listed have moved on to other things, and only one still lives in my town. So, I’m still waiting on two of them to give me their work addresses.
I was putting “Personal address, Ogallalah, Kansas,” as an example. However, I’m just trying to toe the literal corporate line so I’m trying to get business addresses. Trying to “do as I’m told even when I think it’s stupid” for the first time. I shall be crazy soon.
I asked my references beforehand if I could use them and what information I should provide, they all told me to use their cell and emails, which is what I provided. None of them were contacted and I was offered the position.
Two people provided their home address. I looked up the business address of a third, and told her I was using that. I am still waiting to hear from the 4th person. May have to pick another reference.
I don’t think they call references either.
I’ve gotten several jobs without providing the exact addresses of my references. I typically just put the town or city they’re from.
