Asked by wsxwh111 (2464points) September 30th, 2014

Hi guys, thanks a lot for your attention! :)
Recently the rate of anti-gay crimes in NYC is getting higher and higher, I’m shocked to know that a gay guy was shot to death.
I’m a Chinese student and I’m going to study in NYC, I like here a lot, and people here are amazing :D But these crimes make me (I’m gay:b) a little frustrated.
Do you have some little tips to help avoid getting engaged in such things? Is there some common things I should notice&keep in mind to keep safe?
Thanks again!

Keep your head down.

I would think that you would have more problems being Chinese than gay these days but I don’t live there so I couldn’t be sure.

I think this is not true.

Avoiding crime in an American city is the same for gay and straight people.

Keep your wallet or purse close to you. Keep your phone in your pocket.
Stay in populated, well-lighted areas.
Travel in groups.

You will become familiar with the city, and staying safe and avoiding bad situations becomes easy.

New York is actually more gay-friendly than 90% of the rest of the country.

New York is one of the last cities I would worry about violence against gay people. Are yiu walking around with a pink feather boa around your shoulders? I really wouldn’t worry about it for a second. The only precaution you need to take is typical city precautions, stay on the beaten path (easy to do in NY, because the streets almost always have people on them) and don’t wear lots of diamonds and jewelry dripping from your person. There are some not so great neighborhoods, so be more cautious there. Keep your head up, walk like you have a purpose. NY overall is quite safe. I don’t worry about my safety when I am there.

Thanks, guys, I guess I understand. Maybe just because lots of reports showed up doesn’t mean there’re actually a lot of crimes, instead, the crimes are very rare so they caught much attention.:)

Thanks, guys.
I guess I’d like to try therapists. It’s just that in my country psychology is poorly developing and of 1,400,000,000 of population the number of “qualified therapists (which just required passing an exam without necessary education background in psychology or medical)” is about 10.000. I’m a little concerned inappropriate therapy would make it even worse.
