Which flavor in Neapolitan ice cream doesn’t carry its weight?

Asked by JeSuisRickSpringfield (8558points) October 9th, 2014

I picked up some Neapolitan ice cream sandwiches at the store tonight, which made me think of this classic scene from The Simpsons (sound clip here).

Anyway: chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry—which one is just filler?

Well, the chocolate ruins the strawberry. Vanilla + Choc is good. Vanilla + straw is good. This is getting complicated.

The shithead offspring that only drills down into a single flavor is the problem. Death to teenagers.

For me, it’s strawberry.
Never liked it.

anniereborn's avatar

I think if it’s really high quality ice cream they are all good. However, with the only cheapy kind I’ve had….the strawberry is the criminal.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I’d say strawberry too. Ack. I like chocolate and vanilla but strawberry… ugh.

janbb's avatar

It’s a menage a trois that doesn’t really work for any of them. Now Ben and Jerry’s Karamel Sutra with vaniilla, chocolate and a caramel swirl in the center – that rocks!

LuckyGuy's avatar

Wait! There’s another flavor besides chocolate?

Here2_4's avatar

I think it depends on the brand, but the cheap kinds definitely have a dreadful imitation strawberry.

The pink one.

The strawberry for sure if I have to pick one, but I don’t like chocolate ice cream either. Basically, just give me the vanilla. My mom used to buy Neapolitan for my birthday parties when I was little, and coffee ice cream for me.

I remember there was an old Q that discussed Neapolitan ice cream and people talked about it sometimes having cherry instead of strawberry, and various other flavors. I didn’t know it came in other flavors, we always had strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate.

Chocolate ice cream just doesn’t work, its the unemployed flavour bumming around with the workers desperately searching for employment in an area where it has zero qualifications.

rojo's avatar

For some reason the chocolate always has a chalky taste in those sandwiches (but not in the carton, hmmmmmmm?). I suppose I need to spend a little more and get a good one.

Haleth's avatar

Chocolate. Your average chocolate ice cream never tastes like real chocolate to me.

Buttonstc's avatar

Didn’t Neopolitan used to have a green layer (pistachio) ?

JLeslie's avatar

@buttonstc See that goes back to that other Q about different flavors in Neapolitan than I was accustomed to. It seems logical pistachio might have been a flavor for the green in the flag.

Never been a fan of Neapolitan, and strawberry was surely the reason…until I tasted a local, hand-made version in an ice cream cake. I’m generally not a fan of a lot of fruit in my ice cream, but the strawberry in this gourmet treat was truly as good as the chocolate and vanilla.

Beware of cheap ice cream. And be particularly wary of darkly colored flavors with lots of stuff in em. It’s easy to remove old expired ice cream of any flavor, or “botched” runs in a plant, reprocess it, throw in piles of stuff and “voila” rocky road. It’s also a good idea to pay close attention when “quality” brands are sold off to big food conglomerates. Has anyone noticed that there are only 3 flavors of Breyer’s left that actually bear the words “ice cream” on the carton. Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. The others all read “frozen dairy dessert”. And ice cream sanwiches——-for a genuine revelation, read the short story length list of teenie tiny print ingredients on the back of the wrapper. Next trip to the store, I’m going to check for the words “ice cream” on the sandwich packaging. Bet it isn’t there.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No no @johnpowell! Strawberry and chocolate are heaven!

Blondesjon's avatar

Fuck all of you strawberry haters. The whole purpose of Neapolitan ice cream is to enjoy the three flavors combined. That’s why they put them all in the same container.

I do agree with @johnpowell, anyone who just digs one flavor out of the carton deserves a lifetime of being force fed fat-free ice-milk.

dxs's avatar

I’m surprised to be the first to say vanilla. You can’t really taste it unless it’s alone.
In ranking of strength, chocolate > strawberry > vanilla.

Adagio's avatar

Neapolitan never did it for me.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Blondesjon No. Strawberry fucking sucks.

Blondesjon's avatar

then don’t buy an ice cream flavor that clearly boasts, wait for it, a strong strawberry ice cream presence _

Buttonstc's avatar

After reading through this thread I’ve come to the realization of why I’ve never bought Neopolitan ice cream in well over 25 years.

I keep looking for the one with pistachio in it and never finding it. Apparently the chocolate has replaced the green. So, it’s basically not Neopolitan but some other hybrid that has taken over the name :)

JLeslie's avatar

@Buttonstc Are you saying you like the strawberry? Or, was it a different “red” flavor also in your combination?

Buttonstc's avatar

No, it was Strawberry and I just kind of put up with it. But it wasn’t really horrible.

And when eaten in the same bite as the pistachio, it was fine.

But the pistachio was my favorite. But the combo of choc. van. and strawberry really has no appeal for me and personally I find it pointless.

Back when Neopolitan used to contain the green, I don’t think that pistachio ice cream was that available as a stand alone flavor so I was basically buying Neopolitan for the pistachio and tolerating the others :)

JLeslie's avatar

@Buttonstc I have a feeling pistachios probably were less expensive in Italy. I think of it as being grown in the Mediterranean region, although I most associate them with Iran, that might be incorrect though. The Americas are obsessed with chocolate so it doesn’t surprise me the three striped dessert went that direction. I don’t think of pistachio ice cream as being very popular here compared to other flavors.

I’m also wondering if back in the day strawberry and chocolate were readily available artificial flavorings? Now you can get everything artificial flavor. The reason my mind went there is because Nestles Quik came in chocolate and strawberry. Tons of children’s foods were strawberry flavor. I know, because I disliked it. I wasn’t a big chocolate person either when I was a kid.

For my Italian flag dessert I prefer rainbow cookies anyway.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Pistachio is actually my favorite also with chocolate coming in at a close second. You can’t always find it in every freezer section here in the states though. Pistachio, chocolate and vanilla together sound like a winner to me. I would actually buy “neopolitan” then.

Raspberry Ripple FTW

The Neapolitan I remember from my childhood always had strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. I have heard that it was originally made with pistachio to resemble the flag of Italy.

JLeslie's avatar

I didn’t know anyone bought the strawberry, chocolate, vanilla combination for anythng but a child’s birthday party.

The gelato place that I love you are kind of expected to get two or three flavors in your cup. I don’t remember if it was like that when I was in Italy. I am not a big ice cream person.

Here is the wikipedia on Neapolitan ice cream.

I have a pretty legit reason for not being able to handle strawberry icecream or strawberry shakes. When I was twelve, I had to have a barium xray to diagnose an stomach ulcer. They gave me a thick drink dosed with barium and it was warm and chalky and ‘flavoured’ with strawberry. Ack… ack. To this day, 34 years later, I can not eat much of strawberry anything and absolutely not icecream or milkshakes.

JLeslie's avatar

@cazzie For me it’s fake orangy flavored desserts. Tastes like St. Joseph’s chewable children’s aspirin to me. Cremicles with the orange flavor are like medicine to me.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I was just remembering baby aspirin yesterday, and how good they were!

JLeslie's avatar

I ate in a Japanese Hibachi Place tonight and a few people at the table ordered dessert. To my surprise it was a slice of ice cream, pink, green and white! Incredible coincidence considering this Q is so recent and I have not even seen Neopolitan ice cream in years, especially not with one of the flavors being green. The flavors were strawberry, green tea and lychee.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Neapolitan sherbet?

JLeslie's avatar

I thought it was ice cream. I guess maybe I can look at the menu online. I didn’t look at the dessert menu at all, so I am not sure. Now I am curious what they called it.

Here’s an interesting little tidbit I just saw on the news.

To honor Veterans, Baskin Robbins has created a Dark Brown, Tan and Green tricolor flavor of the month called “First Class Camouflage.”

They’ll be donating 10 cents for each scoop sold to the USO.

In addition to the tricolor ice cream itself, there will be Camouflage waffle cones and a Camouflage Sundae.

The colors and flavors are:

Dark Brown=Chocolate
Tan=Salty Caramel
Green=Vanilla Cake

When I first saw the picture of it I was excited assuming that the Green would be Pistachio flavor. Alas, no such luck.

So how is any Vanilla cake in the world Green ? Makes no sense (other than St. Paddy’s Day.)

I love the creativity of the whole idea but not crazy about the Green not being Pistachio. Oh well, I guess it must not be that popular a flavor and I’m in a minority :)

JLeslie's avatar

I guess they just use good dye for the vanilla cake to make it green. The combination of the three flavors I think will be pleasing to a lot of people. I think it’s a nice idea. For green I would like mint chip.

dxs's avatar

@Buttonstc Where’s the closest Baskin Robbins? That looks so good.
